Re: cAP ac / v6.40.4 - frequent disconnects?

Just an update that I upgraded the POE supply from 24v 0.5A to 48v 0.5A, and it's no longer disconnecting/re-booting.

Everything else seems to be working fine also, thx for suggestions!

Re: cAP ac / v6.40.4 - frequent disconnects?

While standards require quite low DC resistance of UTP cables and current of 0.5A through 30 feet of UTP cable should not cause too high voltage drop, use of sub-standard cables or non-perfect plugs and outlets or even oxidation could increase resistance of the PoE feed between ER-X and cAP ac to t...

Re: cAP ac / v6.40.4 - frequent disconnects?

Any suggestions how to trouble shoot this one?

Monday has rolled around & people are back in the house... After four days of no eth port disconnects on the cAP ac, it's again showing disconnects every 10-15 minutes (now that people are using it).

any hints? thx!

Re: cAP ac / v6.40.4 - frequent disconnects?

@anav, all I'm doing is checking the syslogs on the device to which the cAP ac is connected. It lists the interface (eth4) & times of disconnection & connection. Interestingly, there's no one in the house at the moment... and the logs are silent (it's constant for now). Last log was a "...

Re: cAP ac / v6.40.4 - frequent disconnects?

To help eliminate potential problems, I upgraded to the latest firmware (v6.43.4).

Over the last two hours since then, the cAP ac has continued to disconnect & reconnect 10 times. It doesn't go down for long, usually 4-9seconds, but I would love to solve this issue.

cAP ac / v6.40.4 - frequent disconnects?

Device is disconnecting from the network multiple times every hour (ER-X logs)

Any suggestions how to troubleshoot this?

Re: highest power dual band AP? [SOLVED]

much appreciated chechito,

Out of interest, do custom assembled routerboards play well together? i.e. are there many glitches (apart from rightly seating parts together) that one has to navigate (no offense meant... I'm used to building windows computers :-) ).

highest power dual band AP? [SOLVED]

Hi guys, I have a situation where one building would be best supplied by a higher power access point. Am I correct in thinking that the hAP ac currently is the highest power dual-band access point that Mikrotik produces? I'd love to go with something like the metal with omni antenna, but I would pre...

putting the Dude on a gateway router... (security)?

It would be my preference to place the Dude physically behind a gateway router/firewall (on a different device than the gateway router) etc. However, if equipment needs dictate that the Dude goes on the gateway router, what kind of issues would I need to be aware of (I'm new to routerOS & feelin...

@jarda

You've definitely piqued my interest on the 70v system... That must be quite a long cable run. I'm curious how long (approximately)?

Re: PoE Voltage Drops

For long cables or high consuming devices at the end I use dc converters. First creates 70v, injects into long cable by passive poe injector, extracted at the end and another dc step down converter to desired voltage is used between the extractor and the device. A bit work with cheap chinese toys, ...

Re: The Dude - real world examples? How do *you* use it?

@vecernik87 Thanks so very much for that--it gives quite a bit more info and nicely shows some very useful usage scenarios. It is really easy to pick up if any computer is running out of memory/storage and each link can show its utilization based on its current speed and capacity. this might sound r...

Re: The Dude - real world examples? How do *you* use it?

You can see link modulations or plot ccq graphs, for example. Also voltage and temperature graphs together with cpu and memory utilisation graphs might help a lot. Very interesting indeed... OK, voltage/temp/cpu/memory, is that drawn from other Mikrotik devices (besides the one on which the Dude is...

Back to the network. You can do it cheaply and improve continuously further or you can do it perfectly without need of a touch in next years. Your choice. I have really appreciated your input & it has helped me think these issues through better, especially regarding future-proofing the system. ...

Thank you so very much for taking the time to make suggestions etc. much appreciated! I think that gives me a reasonable idea how to proceed... Only question in the back of my mind is whether it would be useful to run "the Dude" as well. I'm new to Mikrotik, so I'm still feeling my way for...

Re: approximating wifi "reach" (how many AP's to install)

Hi Jarda, Hmmm, maybe I should have given more information. I estimate that only 30 or so clients will be connected at any one time... I don't mean to second guess your suggestion. Maybe let me check again, wouldn't a CRS125 be overkill? And to be clear, you're suggesting one access point per apartm...

Re: approximating wifi

The answer always depends on the local situation (not described), type of clients (not described), their behavior (not described), expected functionality - mainly throughput (not described) and other restrictions (not described). OK, fair point. It's a residential block of 8 units, 4 on each side, ...

Thanks samsung172, OK, yes, I can see it helping quite a bit in those situations.

Any other usage scenarios come to mind... eg. would it help troubleshooting devices that have trouble connecting?

The Dude - real world examples? How do *you* use it?

Just looking for feedback here... I can see how checking the status or historical logs of individual devices or network segments could be helpful for troubleshooting... Can anyone give me more examples how they use the Dude? I'd be grateful to hear more,
thanks!

approximating wifi "reach" (how many AP's to install)

I'm new here, so please excuse the ignorance & if this is a nauseatingly frequently asked question. Is there a good way to estimate wifi 2.4Ghz penetration ahead of time? I can visually approximate how many access points are going to be needed based on previous experience, but I'm wondering, is ...

Re: 8 apartments, separate SSID's for security?

brilliant, chechito! thanks so very much. Only part I didn't quite follow was if I set up separate SSID's/WPA2 for each apartment & kept traffic from those SSID's isolated from each other, why would you suggest residents still use a VPN to do sensitive tasks? Is it just to protect them from thei...

Charge tenants more for their own dedicated SSID. Profit. Thanks eXS, yes, that's the longer term plan... we're just not currently there yet... by "dedicated SSID" your talking one discreet SSID's for each apartment right... but do you mean all on the one mikrotik solution (I was thinking...

Re: 8 apartments, separate SSID's for security?

8 apartments, separate SSID's for security?

Bear with me, as I'm new to RouterOS/Mikrotik. I currently serve WiFi to a block of 8 apartments. Access Point isolation is in place, so WiFi clients can't talk to each other, but I'm wondering whether I should separate this into 8 VAP's/SSID's to provide a higher level of security to each apartment...
