Re: RB450 as a PPPoE server

Maybe you can provide us with details about amount of traffic consumption by your users? You can check products performance test and compare it with you results: http://routerboard.com/pdf/routerboard_performance_tests.pdf Maybe there is the problem. My traffic is very low. Right now, ether2 (PPPoE...

RB450 as a PPPoE server

Hello guys. I have some unused RB450 and I had the idea to use them as PPPoE servers. My plan is to install at least 3 of them, so if one gets bad, there are still 2 to serve my customers. So, I tried only one first to test. Last week I got one of these RB450, updated it to ROS 5.2 and configured it...

RTS/CTS in 802.11b mode

Hello, folks.

Does ROS send/respond RTS/CTS frames in 802.11b mode or it's only for 802.11g mode?

A question about cts-to-self

Hello, folks.

I've seen that wireless-test has cts-to-self protection mode. When using cts-to-self, the AP still sensing the carrier before transmiting or it just sends a CTS to self and transmits?

Yeah, but it's only for Nstreme mode. I was thinking about something for the general 802.11 mode.

Another medium access instead of CSMA/CA

Hello folks. I'd like to suggest another medium access. I think most of problems WISPs have with interference is related to the exposed terminal problem. In my case, for example, I use sector antennas in my ERBs and directional antennas in my clients. When my RouterBOARDs transmit to a client, I'm s...

ste:that's what I meant. This weekend I learned that cable length does matter. Sometimes, a long cable is better than a short one (but not so long). RF cable length

Hello, folks.

I see some people talking about cutting the RF cable at correct lengths, to avoid standing waves (just as amateur radios do). What do you say about it? Should we really care? Or it doesn't has strong effects in microwaves links?

Re: Why not increase DFS scan time?

I think DFS scans and selects only ONCE (when you enable the interface) ;) you can make use of scripting, to disable/enable interface at 3:00AM for example, to choose best frequency every night. also the DFS does something when it finds a RADAR. It won't work nice, because at 3 AM most of every com...

So, channel usage is more important than noise? I've made some tests here and found out that noisy channels with few networks are better than clean channels with lots of networks. Am I right?

Hummm, didn't know about it.

Why not increase DFS scan time?

Hello, folks, specially MikroTik developers. DFS is really a cool feature, it can simplify the process of choosing a channel. As the docs say: "AP scans channel list from "scan-list" and chooses the frequency which is with the lowest amount of other networks detected." So, I'd li...

Re: Changing receive sensitivity via software

I've read somewhere that Adaptive Noise Immunity changes card's sensitivity dynamically to avoid interference (I don't know if it is true, but that's what I've read). From this reading, I've had the idea to change the sensitivity manually. I've thought about using low gain antennas already, but as R...

Changing receive sensitivity via software

Hello, folks. Is there any way to change the receive sensitivity via software? Let's suppose I have an AP running ROS and all of its clients are connected at -70 dBm or higher. So, I'd like to set the receiver sensitivity to, let's say, -75 dBm, so, lower signals from other radios couldn't interfere...

Until now is OK. They are connected to a R52.

We've got an increase in performance, but I'm not sure if it's related to RTS/CTS or card change, because we were using R52H before and changed to R52 the same time we've started to test RTS :p

I enabled it on the ap also.
I think you don't need RTS in AP, as every client will sense the channel.

This week I'm testing RTS/CTS in my clients. They use Ovislink, Edimax or Zinwell radios. I'm setting RTS Threshold on these radios to 500 to test.

Re: RTS/CTS options in ROS

I think the point is enabling RTS/CTS on client side. Why? Because when the AP sends a frame, everybody listen to it and wait (CSMA/CA). But when a client wants to send a frame, it needs to RTS first, so the AP can CTS everybody and everybody will wait. I'm talking about the hidden node problem, whi...

Re: Confused about rts/cts

The mad reason to turn off ROS RTS/CTS responses is to disable RTS/CTS at all in a network and test the effects. As a computer scientist, I enjoy doing such things. :) It helps me to learn more. Of course, in a real application, I'd let RTS/CTS working as normal. But, anyway, I think disabling RTS/C...

OK, it's like this: Previously RouterOS AP always replied with CTS to those who asked RTS, but RouterOS client never asked for RTS. Ie. the support was not in the client. Then we introduced NStreme polling to solve the hidden node problem. Right now, in the Wireless Test package, we have also inclu...

Client mode: means that Noise Immunity will be activated only when the radio is in client mode (station).
AP and Cliente mode: means that Noise Immunity will be activated in both modes (station and bridge/ap bridge).

Did you get good results with Adaptive Noise Immunity turned on?

Do R52H and EMP-8602 Plus support Adaptive Noise Immunity? I'm asking this because ROS' doc says that it is supported only in AR6001X and newer chipsets and WinBox shows AR5414 for both cards, but the ANI option is available via WinBox.

Frequency usage vs noise floor

Hello, folks.

When I use the frequency usage monitor on a wireless card, it shows me two pieces of information: usage (how many networks are using that channel) and noise floor.

So, my doubt is: what's the best choice? Less network usage or less noise floor?

TIA
