Theatre sound engineer here. I need a simple LAN covering a couple of key areas of a theatre - namely around the mixing desk and in the wings of the theatre. No internet connectivity required. Mainly devices such as ipads, laptops and mixing desks - mostly joining via dhcp with the odd fixed ip for a few devices. I know the basics of networking, but am still essentially a noob. I've done a fair bit of looking around for solutions but haven't managed to solve this one myself, so i'm reaching out for help.
I've got a hAp set up with a new network name, SSID, admin password etc. Have left it on 192.168.88.1. DHCP range set up from .100 to .200.
I've then got a map lite, which I was hoping to connect via the POE port on the hAp, to act as an access point in the wings, connected via ethernet.
I set this up on 192.168.88.2. To start with i've given it a different SSID just while I was testing (so I knew where I was connecting to), and initially had set it not to be offering DHCP as I thought the DHCP from the hAp would be carried through. This is where my knowledge has escaped me as my laptop wouldn't pick up an address from it! Even if I set the map lite up with its' own DHCP range (201-254) and connect to it, I can't see the hAp from it - the 2 devices don't seem to have access to each other even though they're physically connected by ethernet and are in the same range.
I'm lost!
It may be better starting again! ideally via Quick Set, but I can't seem to figure if there's a solution in there that'll work for me. Home mesh MAY be the answer but I can't work out if it'll use ethernet for backhaul.
My basic eventual requirements are;
One LAN-only network. One SSID and password, with 2 access points - one the hAp, one the map lite. If mesh-style handoff worked then great, but they're 2 very physically separate areas, so I have a feeling signal strength alone should be sufficient for the devices to work this out themselves. Ethernet connection between the access points.
DHCP from one source on the LAN (ideally the hAp - in smaller theatres i'd probably not deploy the map lite, so best if anything "clever" is self contained within the hAp, which will always be fastened in the mixing desk flight case.
Any simple guides or steps you can offer to set the above up would be hugely appreciated. I'm likely never to touch this setup again once it's working, I just need to get it right this once!
Thank you!
