PTP connection to switch for admin

Thu Jun 29, 2023 1:34 am

Running RouterOS 7.10 on a CRS326-24S+2Q+RM, however, this issue has affected different switches and versions of ROS.

The purpose of this link is for the switches own connectivity for administration.

I can't quite get my head around this. Setting up PTP (trunk) connections are trivial on a router and just work ie: I can connect to any of the PTP IP addresses on a router and access the CLI. But despite having the same OS, switches seem to function differently. The only way I have ever been able to get a switch IP connected is to pop its IP address on the bridge and set the bridge PVID to the vlan of the relevant netblock. Or on a port and then connect that port to an access port on another switch.

But this has obvious issues now I want to run multiple PTP links and a loopback with OSPF for redundancy. These links are between the switch and 2 routers.

When I try and implement the exact same config approach on the switch it just doesn't work.

Is someone able to explain what is happening here which makes a switch behave differently from their routers?

Really hard to follow what you are saying. Please provide a network drawing and your configuration. Otherwise, we're guessing.
To export and paste your configuration (and I'm assuming you are using WebFig or Winbox), open a terminal window, and type (without the quotes) "/export file=any-filename-you-wish". Then open the files section and right click on the filename you created and select download in order to download the file to your computer. It will be a text file with whatever name you saved to with an extension of .rsc. Suggest you then open the .rsc file in your favorite text editor and redact any sensitive information. Then in your message here, click the code display icon in the toolbar above the text entry (the code display icon is the 7th one from the left and looks like a square with a blob in the middle). Then paste the text from the file in between the two code words in brackets.

Thanks very much and I got my answer there. I needed to add the bridge to the list of tagged ports under /interface/bridge/vlan:
