ap bridge missing on cp AX (cAPGi-5HaxD2HaxD)

Sat Jan 27, 2024 11:02 am

Hi,
in my home network i have a RB750Gr3 as router and several RBcAPGi-5acD2nD as wifi spot configured in ap bridge.
In this way all my home devices (wired and wireless) are in the same lan subnet.
I just bought a cAPGi-5HaxD2HaxD for adding a 6g wifi in the pool, but i discovered that it has not the same modality.
What I can do it for emulating the same behaviour of the other access point?

You're using new wifi driver on cAP ax. Which has most options reworked. Mode "ap" supports what "ap-bridge" did in old wireless driver.

One question: how do APs (cAP ax and older cAP acs) connect to router? Wired using UTP cables? If that's do, then the "bridge" part of functionality doesn't play any role in your setup, you could set cAP acs to mode=ap and there would be no change in how wireless stations use wireless network.

Does your current setup include CAPsMAN by any chance?

cAP AX (the last ones I saw) come default with 7.8 out of factory if I am not mistaking.
IF you are using capsman, you need to upgrade to at least 7.10.
(7.8 did not have default caps mode for AX devices, 7.9 is buggy as hell w.r.t. wifi).

Then reset to caps mode or default mode, as needed.
Quickset on AX devices is not as extensive as it was on legacy wifi devices so some manual modifications might be needed (but caps mode is a good starting point).

RBcAPGi-5acD2nD = cap AC.
Theoretically you can upgrade those wifi drivers to wave2 so all APs are using wave2.
And then Hex can be used as capsman manager with wave2 (7.13, it will be available as default).

yes this is the setup. wired directly to the router using the ethernet UTP cables.
So the "bridge" which kind of roles plays usually?

I'm on 7.13 but not using capsman (i tried several years ago but a lot troubles so i decided for a more normal way)

The router is a RB750Gr3

... so if will take some time for reconfiguring all which could be the best option for managing all in a more easy and "clean" way?

bridge functions are used when two wireless devices "bridge" gap between two wired islands. One device us "ap-bridge" and other device is "station-bridge". There are variations of the setup, but roughly this is it.

As I mentiobed, new wifi doesn't offer different AP modes and since 7.10 (or something like that) ap mode includes also ap-bridge.

If you're interested in this matter, you can read description of station modes, which essentially explains difference between ap-bridge and ap as well.

So if i understood correctly
I have a modem connected to the hEX, then all the cAPs wired to the hEX
so i will have a bridge interface for the modem, several ethernet interface for the access points
There is no need of additional ap bridge for the access points because belongs to the same "island"

Ok. at this point how i need to configure the cAP to use the hEX dchp server for releasing the same lan (wired and wireless) to all the connected devices?

The interface to your modem is off bridge.

All interfaces on Hex are to be put in one bridge.
All interfaces on cAP AX are to be put in one bridge.

In this case, look to bridge (in a hugely simplified way) as if it was a dumb switch. You want all those Hex interfaces (excluding modem interface) and all cap interfaces to be on the same network.

ap-bridge was just a name, no bridge in the function.
now it's called ap. simple name change.

Nice but now the quickset "ptp ap bridge" also disappeared and I cannot manage to retrieve a working configuration.
I want everything in the same subnet, but I cannot achieve it after upgrade to last version on my hap ax3.
