queues and port priorities

Sat Apr 09, 2005 12:23 pm

Hello, I have recently installed Mikrotik as our new LAN gateway to the internet. We have a 384k leased line connection to the internet and some 20 PC's connected to it.

I created basic setup really easy, but I am having problems with understanding queues and could use some assistance over a certain problem. I have read documentation on Mikrotik over and over again, but I just cannot understand queues. All the rules I create doesn't seem to be doing anything. While searching forums I noticed lots of people having a similar problem, but when I apply solutions offered I cannot see any change :( .

Here is the problem :

I need to prioritize incoming connections on certain ports over other traffic, and also we need to shape our traffic so each PC cannot use more than 96kbps.

We are using masquerade option because we have only one public IP address (static).

This is the setup (Mikrotik 2.8 is used) :

ether1-
Local lan: 10.0.1.0/24 GW 10.0.0.1

ether2-
Internet connection: 81.93.xxx.xx

First I need to create a traffic shaping table where no single user can have more than 96 kbps to itself.

Then I need to prioritize some ports over other:

port 5100 needs to be of priority 3

SSH, SSL, DNS needs to be of priority 4

bulk web traffic (http, ftp) needs to be of lower priority (6 or lower)

Help will be greatly appreciated :) .

Just read this. If you take the time for it, it's not that difficult:

I read this over and over again, and every time I read it again, I get confused. When I finaly think that I understood the matter, I get confused again :( :( . I can see where they are going with that script but I get lost in the details .....
