Huawei usb 3g modems (used by vodafone)

Sun Oct 21, 2007 7:36 pm

As I have read, MikrotikOS support various cards made by Huawei such as E620 and E630

Presently Vodafone, one of the largest European Providers uses the E220 usb modem

Is there any intention or any news regarding support of 3g usb modems ?

Look into this list
http://www.mikrotik.com/testdocs/ros/2. ... nt.php#.15
It is not full, there are devices that isn't listed here.
If the device isn't recognized then plug it in, make the support output file and send to support@mikrotik.com

If you will get one, attach it to a RouterOS router and make a supout.rif file - we will add this to the list. This would be very welcome, so please contact support if you have this modem.

all these cards are supported in RouterOS v3. If something is not supported, we can take your supout.rif file and make support.

2.9.27 won't work. you have to use RouterOS v3 because only this version has drivers for it.

dial-on-demand=no disabled=no max-mru=1500 max-mtu=1000 \
modem-init="at+cgdcont=1,\"IP\",\"steinmann.A1.net\"" mrru=disabled \

We used:
/interface ppp-client print
 0 X name="ppp-out1" max-mtu=1500 max-mru=1500 port=usb1 user=""
      password="" profile=ppp-LMT phone="*99***1#" dial-command="ATDT"
      modem-init="AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.lmt.lv"" null-modem=no
      dial-on-demand=no add-default-route=yes use-peer-dns=yes
      allow=pap,chap,mschap1,mschap2
Did you try to experiment with dial-command, phone nr? You know, sometimes one more asterisk, or one less comma can make the whole difference. We achieved the working config by pure experimentation

for this card "Sierra Wireless AirCard 875"

if it's not not supported in this version, how i install it's driver (it has a linux driver in this wb site http://www.sierrawireless.com/faq/ShowFAQ.aspx?ID=601)

ok when i insert the card is there a way to the activity like (/var/log/messages) for example. and how i go from the router command line to the linux command line.

ok let's say that i'm not lucky at all, and the answers to the later questions are "No" :)
do i have to get "buy" MikroTik v3 to have the driver in there.

thanks and i'm sorry if i had too many Q's

(To normis....for example ! hi!)

Has anybody put a Mini-PCI 4-port USB in a Routerboard (or RB600 or 133 or 333 for example)
and in the usb port a gprs/umts device ? (a good way to control the net if the link drops)
Is it necessary that Mikrotik has drivers inside ?

Let me put the question another way....
What's the best way to control an rb600 on the top of the mountain if link drops ?
Umts, gprs, for example, but how do I connect a device the Routerboard ?

There are some expensive gprs gateways and routers but I need a cheap way, of course.

Carlo

this is the device I've found.

Im trying to work out what theses settings are for the E220 within New Zealand/Australia:
We used:
/interface ppp-client print
 0 X name="ppp-out1" max-mtu=1500 max-mru=1500 port=usb1 user=""
      password="" profile=ppp-LMT phone="*99***1#" dial-command="ATDT"
      modem-init="AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.lmt.lv"" null-modem=no
      dial-on-demand=no add-default-route=yes use-peer-dns=yes
      allow=pap,chap,mschap1,mschap2
Did you try to experiment with dial-command, phone nr? You know, sometimes one more asterisk, or one less comma can make the whole difference. We achieved the working config by pure experimentation
I can connect to the card from hyper terminal and when i issue the ATI command i get a response from the card, how do i now monitor the card as i connect through the vodafone connection manager, or am i way off and i will no be able to grab the int string this way?

Regards

Ok i have it all set up and running great, however if i reboot the router i loose the usb ports listed under ports.

If i look under resources however i can see that the E220 is listed under the USB devices.

I am only able to get it to return occasionally if i reboot and unplug and replug etc. any idea as to if it is a soft or hardware issue.

Has anybody put a Mini-PCI 4-port USB in a Routerboard (or RB600 or 133 or 333 for example)
and in the usb port a gprs/umts device ? (a good way to control the net if the link drops)

Let me put the question another way....
What's the best way to control an rb600 on the top of the mountain if link drops ?
Umts, gprs, for example, but how do I connect a device the Routerboard ?
So is it possible to connect a USB 3G modem to a routerboard? I don't see any USB ports. Would one have to use an internal board or something?

I would appreciate some feedback please.

Thanks.

You need a x86 machine for that or maybe RB230.

i'm currently looking at a miniPCI to USB conversion.
Maybe this can be a solution.

Re: Huawei usb 3g modems (used by vodafone)

Hi.

I've been trying to make an Huawei E156 work on 3.16 OS. I created a test machine (24h licence period) on a standby laptop (1.3G Pentium) which have only one LAN onboard and there's anything else plugged to USB bus except the E156.

I listed the detected USB devices and there is one "Huawei Mobile Device" (480Mbps), so it's ok.

Then I created an ppp account according to several examples I found here on the forum and wiki but does not connect.

Using the info provided at http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Option_Gl ... _USB_Modem, I run ([admin@3Gtest] > system serial-terminal usb1) and gain access to modem, checked some AT commands (ok, worked) and when idle this serial terminal shows some modem telemetry as RSSI, mode (it's a quadriband modem), etc, updated every 5 seconds or so.

The Vendor / Product is the same (yes, it is) as model E220 (e.g. 0x12d1/0x1003), I confirmed that on a Windows XP machine and under an Kubuntu 8.10 machine.

The E156 have, besides the modem, two virtual discs inside: one is a 12Mb "cd-rom" which have the microsoft drivers, 3G ISP dialer, etc. The other one is a "SD-card reader".

On some linux distributions (kernel > 2.6.19 i guess) the E156 "creates" 3 USB ports, e.g. "virtual discs" (ttyUSB0), "modem telemetry" (ttyUSB1) and "data modem" (ttyUSB3). Older kernels this USB ports must be added manualy, there's some extra config lines to make kernel ignore the discs.

Any ideas?

I don't understand, you got access to the AT mode? then RouterOS already fully supports this modem. What happens in AT mode, then is completely modem dependent. RouterOS has nothing to do with that. Maybe you have to contact your mobile provider and work with them, to find out why it doesn't connect

I re-installed 3.16, created ppp using Winbox and voilà ... it's running.

I need to choose now the minimum 3.16 config because I'm a home user and I'm thinking to order a RB if one has USB or even the CF<>IDE product you have. I live at countryside and 3G modem must be in the top of a hill away from home, in a shelter. I don't want HDs there, just a CF or even a pen drive + notebook.

I'll play a little bit more. I have 2 WRAP and a RB, but all of them uses 2.9.XX and I guess they're not eligible to upgrade anymore. And they don't have USB anyway.

Thanks sir.

most 2.9 routers can safely be upgraded to v3.16 by using netinstall. just try

the only currently available RouterBOARD with USB is model 230. We will have some more models next year.

[off-topic]I have a stand alone WRAP2E with 2.9.28 as far I remembered (MARE400 AP). But it's off for a long time now, and I forgot the password. I know that in this cases we need to re-install ROS in order to restore / erase configs and passwords but this board came with ROS already installed. So I removed the flash and overrited everything with the last RouterOS version. Later I'll decide what I'll do.[/off-topic]

Back to the E156, it worked ok until I decided to install RouterOS on a pen-drive. Then came back the same behaviour I described before: no conection at all. Dialing forever. When I posted that problem was gone, the USB port used for ppp connection was USB2.

I took a look at the ROS resources and there was lots of IRQs dedicated to Huawei Modem. Vy strange.

Then I opened the \system\console using Winbox and besides several unused VCs reserved for "linux" there was (is) a VT102 terminal tied to USB1 (which belongs to the same E156, when plugged it creates USB1 and USB2. One seems "data", the other seems "console" or "user interface", 2 different serial circuits).

Well, I disabled this VT102 terminal at \system\console and so there is !!! Modem connected but NOT via USB2 but USB1 then.

I don't know, seems that ROS is assuming a VT102 for USB1 (seems the data port) when, may be, VT102 shoud be tied to USB2 (looks like the telemetry port, 4800-8-N-1) and vice-versa.

Now, back to the tests. So lets see how RB230 looks like. :D

Huawei E156 + ROS 3.16 follow up.

Sat Nov 29, 2008 8:25 am

Hi:

I tested E156 on two different Pentium machines (a 1.3GHz laptop and a 2.4GHz desktop) using ROS 3.16. The only way to make this 3G modem connect is disabling VT102 at \system\console and if E156 is the ony USB device must use USB1. USB2 may be the telemetry interface or the MMC/CD interfaces. I don't know which USB port modem will use if any other USB device connected.

Now I'm running ROS 3.16 on a WRAP 1E (233MHz X86), bios 1.11, USB 1.1 and the E156 is working fine. Was necessary to open WRAP bios setup to enable USB feature (normally disabled) and to install a 10 pin connector at WRAP PCB to have access to USB interface. At the same time, I built an ESD circuit in a separated PCB, as recommended by the manufacturer. E156 manual says USB2.0 - but - seems compatible with USB1.1. No problems with the \system\console like I noticed before at the laptop/desktop. On WRAP the E156 creates 3 USB ports (data, telemetry, discs) so USB1 is ok.

The E156 performance on WRAP board is poor when a Micro-SD card is installed at the modem. Without this Micro-SD everything's ok. At the laptop/desktop no difference at all with or without Micro-SD card at the modem. May be because the USB2.0 they have.

Now with LAN connection, a single PC as a client, 3G modem connected at EDGE mode (230Kbps) the CPU load at full internet speed is 28% maximum. Tomorrow I'll add an 802.11 B/G Ubiquiti card, enable some sort of AP or Hotspot and check the CPU load when E156 is connected using HSDPA. Mobile service providor limits the download speed at 2Mbps.

May be there's a bug that only show up at desktops/laptops. I don't have a RB with USB to test (yet).

Marcus

Guys,

Got Huawei E220.
I can find the device ans serial port for the ppp client.
I create this ppp-client:
[admin@climat-gw] > interface ppp-client print
Flags: X - disabled, R - running
0 name="ppp-out1" max-mtu=1500 max-mru=1500 mrru=disabled port=usb2
command-channel=0 data-channel=0 info-channel=0 user="" password=""
profile=default phone="*99***1#" dial-command="ATDT"
modem-init="AT+GCDCONF=1,"IP","online.telia.se"" null-modem=no
dial-on-demand=no add-default-route=yes use-peer-dns=yes
allow=pap,chap,mschap1,mschap2
[admin@climat-gw] >

Still I get:
17:40:13 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: initializing...
17:40:13 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: reseting link...
17:40:13 async, ppp, info ppp-out1: reseting link... - could not acquire serial po
rt
17:40:13 async,ppp,info ppp-out1: disconnected

I do know that on my Windows PC i didnt need to give any PIN CODE for trhis Huawei 3G dongle, but on my MAC I had to.

Anyonme have any input to make this work for me?

Thanks

Sligth correction, I actually have:

Guys,

Problem simply was as I suspected that the SIM card wanted a PIN CODE.
Didnt find any good way to send PIN CODE through AT mode. Best trick then is to take the SIM CARD from the HUAWEI and put it into your normal cell phone. Then start the cell up and use the SIM card maintenance menus on your cell to disable security (i.e. telling the SIM CARD to NOT ask for its PIN).

Then the conf mentioned earlier in this thread made the whole thing rock!

Rock on dudes!

hello,
Actually, bthe usb dongle is still working, but i tried another version of ZTE MF 202/262, but this one shows on the USB interface, when /system/resources/usb. But did not see the ppout port showing in the interface. Even on the ports, it did not show. the version i am using is v5.23.

Out of annoyance, i have to remove it cus the owner whats to use his own modem and no other type of modem.

Please, Mikrotik team you should look into making sure that ZTE USB modems are all supported because their devices stand the test of time.

Thanks
