DNS Basics - move from DDNS Peer to Cloudflare

Fri May 17, 2024 4:40 pm

I am a vanilla HAP Ax3 user. RouterOS 7.6. Not RouterOS literate but sufficient fluency for my basic needs.
I am fibre with a UK ISP called Plusnet. I am a Static IP address.
They provide DDNS Servers at 212.159.13.49 and 212.159.6.9. They are slow. I am connected as a PPPOE Client.
I can see the ‘Use Peer DNS’ checkbox to disconnect in DHCP Client and my ISP provided DNS Servers.
I’d like to use CloudFlare at 1.1.1.1. & a secondary server
I can see these entry fields in DNS Settings – ‘ Servers ‘ above the current greyed-out DDNS server addresses from my ISP. .
I can also see the ‘ Allow Remote Requests ‘ checkbox is ticked.
What (other) RouterOS 7.6 setting do I have to alter to use Public DNS Servers ? Did I mention Firewall ?
I’d like a local DNS Cache.
I assume I just click on the DNS Settings ‘ Cache ‘ Button ?
Much easier to ask dumb questions than spend a weekend reinstalling firmware.

Thanks,

I’m sure this has been asked before. Apologies.

I had the HAP ax3 for nearly a year on RouterOS 7.6. It has worked flawlessly. Yes, I don’t need more than 20% of its facilities (and yes it reminds me of the Cli of my long gone Cisco IOS days) but a year ago very few alternatives existed post-Covid and no I wasn’t going to shell out £300 for an AX home router.

The IP - DNS options apply to device itself, if you want to specify them yourself untick the Use Peer DNS, then you need to tell client devices what servers should they use and thats in IP - DHPC, if you want your router to resolve DNS requests then it will be IP of your router.. and ofc you have to enable the Allow Remote Requests

By the way, DDNS is service that is used to resolve non-static IPs, so if you have public but not static IP you can use DDNS service to connect to your home for example...

What you are un-ticking is the list of columns shown, not the interface itself, that still as "yes" as you can read in the same screenshot.

In addition, you cannot modify this interface, as it has been dynamically added by "internet detect" probe. You will need to create the interface at IP -> DHCP Client, and the, inside the interface configuration, untick the "Use Peer DNS" option (basically enable the first one you had disabled, and modify this inside the interface).

If you are a vanilla user, I suggest DO NOT remove the default router configuration, and work from that setup instead from a blank router.

Kind regards.
