I hope this isn't a duplicate - I've had a look through and can find people speaking about optical modules not RJ45/copper but please redirect me if this isn't the case!

I've recently bought some L009 and RB5009, I'm trying to uplink the L009 to the RB5009 via the 2.5Gbe RJ45 port leaving the other ports available.

I have bought a supposed Mikrotik compatible 2.5Gbe RJ45 SFP from Aliexpress ( https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005529894356.html ) which whilst recognised in the L009 does not function even if I set the speed manually. I've also tried an Arista SFP-1G-T that I had from a previous project, again I can't get this to function either.

So I thought clearly I need a Mikrotik branded SFP so I duly ordered a Mikrotik S+RJ10 only to find that this also will not function. (I didn't parse https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/display/ ... patibility correctly and thought it was in the supported list )

So I guess my question is does the SFP cage work on the L009?

If anyone has a working copper/RJ45 module and can advise a brand/model of SFP that will work in the L009 at a number of speeds up to 2.5Gbe I'd be super grateful! (I need multiple speed support as some locations will have poor cable so the option for multiple speeds is critical)

Thanks - that's the topic I was referring to when I said they were mostly about optical modules. The RJ45 module they mention is the S+RJ10 which also does not work.

I've now got the budget Aliexpress one working but only at 2.5Gbe which is great for one use I have for it but less so where the cabling may be not up to standard so I was hoping to be able to drop the speed but continue to use the SFP.

The module I have lists as having an LC connector so I needed 2.5G-baseX not baseT as I was expecting:

I don't know, info is often confused in this matter, from that thread I understood that the S+RJ10 does work on L009, but only in 2.5 GB forced mode.
Maybe there is *something else* going on in your case.

Having that S+RJ10 and having some troubles between RB5009 and CSS610 (I deliberately wanted to lower speed because of heat issues with that SFP when it runs at full 10Gbps), I learned from support that S+RJ10 can NOT be set to lower speed.
It will determine maximum speed based on cable and other end. No other option.

So if I put it in CSS610 and connect 2.5Gb port from RB5009 to it, it will comply.
When I connect S+RJ10 on both ends however, it will go for 10Gbps (which is not what I want because it will cause heat issues in RB5009 with it's passive cooling).

I certainly could not get it to hold link consistently even when I disabled autoneg and set the speed. It does say on the compat list that it's not working on the L009 so maybe it's true!

You're right though could be other things at play as I've only one of each at the moment.

This is worth noting and for me I want to be able to drop the speed much further to get a stable link.

In any Mikrotik device having an SFP+ slot, you should be able to plug a Mikrotik supported (or even better, a Mikrotik branded) copper SFP/SFP+ module serving 2.5 Gb/s as heat issues exist.

If the other side only uses 2.5Gbps, it will adjust accordingly. I've tested it with RB5009, it works.
It's just a big disadvantage that S+RJ10 can only align with the other side and nothing else. You can not set it to a lower speed on its own.

I gain the impression that the S+RJ10 still runs quite warm, as its backend has to be run at approx 10.3G
(whether connected on the RJ45 side at 1G, 2.5G, or 10G)

While an actual 2.5G unit's backend runs at 2.5G (* 10/8).
(Whether connected on the RJ45 side at 2.5G, 1G or lower speeds)

It works with the Rb5009, it's even listed as supported but on the L009 it's a different result.

The S+RJ10 plugs into a 10G sfp+ interface.
The L009 has a 2.5G sfp interface.
