This is a big day for us and hopefully for you too.

WinBox 4 is finally here, for Windows, macOS and Linux.

We have worked on it long and hard, but it's still only the first public beta, so a lot of things will change for sure. Not all features are there yet, they will come soon, and you will not have to wait another 15 years. There are a lot of new design decisions that might be hard to get used to, but we have chosen to leave most of the look familiar. Enjoy and write your comments, suggestions and wishes. Of course, a lot of design things will still change, we know there are some controversial things. Please try to report bugs first, design comments second.

- Apps for multiple operating systems!
- Most importantly, since it's all built from zero, we have the ability to quickly change and fix things!

Known issues to be addressed :

Some Keyboard shortcuts missing (currently only cmd/ctrl+W and Esc works)
Many UI buttons need Hover help text
Special characters lost when upgrading from WinBox3, but work fine when entered via WinBox4 (can't be fixed!)
Skins not supported
Needs ability to "select many routers and connect to all" in Loader
Need auto light-dark mode setting based on OS settings
LTE Interface graphs are missing
Can't ping DNS name
should be some vertical split control between the login/password on left and the neighbors

It's nice. And fast. Huuuuuge, but nice and fast.

Ctrl + Shift + W does not seem to work for me on Windows, though. Neither does to the ole ESC key.

Looks very nice I must say. First thing however is that under interfaces the VRRP interfaces does not indicate if they are running master or backup. This means you have to open the interface to see the status, but this is a very very small complaint :-)

Comments are there, but the column ir collapsed by default. Click on the header (second column from left)

Looks Good, but gives WebFig Vibes because of missing Tabs when opening interface or in-depth menu
I would prefer if there is a wide option to use tabs or just scroll and collapsable submenus, or Tabs

The Quick-Set window is awkward since every settings is collapsed which makes no sense—especially in Quick-Set, where you need to see everything at once! Overall, I think these collapsibles are a bad idea and don't fit with the Winbox concept.

There are some font glitches on 84% zoom level. Letter spacing in menu bar is way too small on this zoom level. Maybe disconnect GUI zoom from font size? Dedicated setting to choose font size instead of zooming the whole GUI? Many applications offer to choose font family and font size. Usually there is also a "big UI" or "condensed UI" mode. But usually not so many zoom levels.

Lol. I have no issues on any other application on this Linux PC. Please take my comment as it is.

Just observed a crash:

- Open winbox
- set zoom level to 67%
- connect to router
- winbox crash

Does not happen on 100%, 92%, 84%, 75%.

edit: this is inconsistent. sometime happens on 67, then on 75. I don't know even if is related to zoom level at all. where to find logs?

Nice to see an update. In the main it seems to work well, but...

1 - <esc> doesn't work any more - closing a whole bunch of panels is now more time consuming and frustrating (the escape key is in the same place on all my keyboards, the shift/control keys aren't).

2 - Comments aren't shown by default - again, more time/frustration in enabling them. Comments are important!

3 - Status tool-tips aren't shown when you hover the mouse over them like they were on Winbox3 (see screenshot) - There doesn't seem to be an easy way to find out what all the letters mean.

4 - Removal of the tabs at the top of the panels and using a drop box instead makes navigating the options/contents more time consuming and frustrating - it's no longer easy to see what all the sub-categories are and no longer possible to quickly flip between subcategories.

5 - 'Configuration' takes up a chunk of the right hand side of each panel - it means I have to make the window wider and means more scrolling on smaller screens (like the tiny laptop I use on customer sites) - again, more time required and more frustrating.

6 - <ctrl>+<tab> doesn't work any more - no longer easy to move between panels.

7 - <ctrl>+m doesn't work any more - much more time consuming to add comments (double-click line, click in comment box, type comment and then back to the mouse to click on 'OK')

8 - <Num-> and <Num+> no longer enable/disable rows

9 - <Del> does work (deletes row), but <Ins> doesn't (insert row)

Sorry about the above, it does sound like I'm having a moan, but it does seem that while Winbox3 has its limitations, one thing it was very good at was giving fast access to changes and also seeing required information. Winbox4 seems to have slowed down the workflow not just a bit, but quite a lot. For this to be usable, day to day, I need much more keyboard control - bring back the shortcuts!

I do appreciate that this is a beta release, but please please add in more functionality to speed up the workflow - don't make me frustrated by forcing me to use my mouse when a keyboard shortcut would make an action much faster.

For example, to open NAT rules and add a comment to a row (where "¬" means toggle between keyboard and mouse)...
Winbox 3 - <click><click><click><click>¬<ctrl>+m[type comment]<enter>
Winbox 4 - <click><click><click><click><double-click><click>¬[type comment]¬<click>

All that having been said, Winbox4 certainly looks smarter.

Unfortunately, it did not. I got an empty Winbox, no saved connection. In Winbox 3 everything is still there.
Edit: Found my mistake, I created a new address database with a different name in the past.

If you were / are running WinBox on MacOS using Wine you can find your stored addresses in the Addresses.cdb file in this folder:

Hi, thanks for the native Linux version. A few notes for you, I hope this is not only my issue. Debian 12+I3wm
- turning the angle of the pointer at the main menu is quite annoying
- inner windows have barely visible borders, it's hard to see mainly for the new inner window on top, they blend into the background
- no exit button (sadness)
- the right column with options (action in interface list table) is only wasting of space

In general I do not get that exited about new looks, but it is nice to see some effort put into it. Obviously, as mentioned in the opening post, there are functionalities that are not there yet.
Two suggestion I have at the first glance
1. when entering the field of user and password at first window when you want to connect to a device, make them selectable, in such way that one can over write any text that previously was entered.
2. Add an option to close a session after x amount of time.

Maybe it's because I'm getting old but it's very, very, difficult to navigate because of the "flat" design.

Also something as simple as adding a firewall rule takes a lot longer because there's no tabs anymore.

Suppose I have no choice but to get used to it.

That's not what I said. It was nice to be able to boast with a standalone management application that was efficient and not as bloated as everything else is these days. Also, a 2MB app downloads a whole lot quicker when you're on a crappy connection than a 50MB app.

Just tried to install Winbox on Mac Os Big Sur 11.7.10. But once I try to launch the app it crashes immediately on startup with a message in german "Datei nicht gefunden" (file not found") and that's it. Anyone an idea what I did wrong? Too stupid to install a DMG in like 10 years Mac OS experience?

seems to be the same issue as Larsa already reported. And to be honest, saying "such an old Mac OS version" I feel offended. Support for Big Sur ended Q4/23. It is not like some super ancient version from 2011.

The interface is too spacious, as if it were not a network engineer's tool but a dating app. Not usable on 13" FullHD Dell with lot of windows inside (firewall, ipsec, dhcp)

Hope you will keep support for version 3 in future firmwares for as long as possible. I like native Windows panels, not MacOS crap on my PC.

On Windows 11, the UI feels delayed. Moving the windows around or right clicking to bring up the right click context menu has a delay. I also preferred the tabs over the collapsible sections. I agree with a few other people's thought where it now seems to take up more screen space... maybe a compact mode would be the way forward for those who wish the information to be more compact.

The Default for inline comments is to hide the column, that took me a while to workout I had to unhide it and I was trying to resize it larger for ages 🤣

I caught myself a few times intuitively swapping the cancel button with the apply button (wanting to cancel but hitting on the place where apply today is...) because CANCEL/OK are usually next to each other...
Maybe create a poll on where to put this?

The font should be lighter. More dark shades/gradations. There are some applications that do this quite well, like Postman, Firefox, JetBrains IDE, etc.

First of all, thanks for the Linux version, this is a real step forward.

First beta issue I encountered: copy & paste does not work, e.g. I can't paste my password: the app freezes for a few seconds, then returns to life with nothing pasted. As a result I have to write out passwords etc. by hand, it's doable but a bit tedious. This is on OpenSuSE Tumbleweed running KWin Wayland with KDE Plasma 6.1.4.

Works fine on Fedora 40, KDE spin. Run it from terminal and see what log say.

Like it. Just for my taste, important things should not be in a list. Like "Filter Rules" and if I want "Mangle" i have to open a smol drop-down list/window.
And enable / disable / remove should also be on top with the status line. Thats stuff at the bottom is just weird.

But after all, I like it.

EDIT:
Crashed on MBP (M1).
It worked OK when i used Discover and connected to my MT.
Than i imported Addresses.
When i select one entry and click connect or double click application crashes.
BUT if i select same (or any other saved contact) so that left side is filled with all data, than change to Discover and connect it works OK.

Most of our field engineers are forced to use slightly older MacBooks (and you can probably guess why) using macOS 12/13 and equipped with Intel CPUs because we need to run a bunch of Windows-based legacy apps. Even though this particular Intel machine we tested on is "somewhat" older, I saw another post where someone using an M1 CPU had trouble with caches too.

Immediate feedback:

Definitely a nice look, though not without issues. Most of these have been mentioned; I will add one more vote to those.

- Hopefully performance can be improved. Dragging windows and scrolling lags a lot.
- Reordering of columns is a must.
- Expand the comment column by default. Actually I'm not sure how this tri state column works.
- Don't use stupid link style buttons, such as the ones under Actions and Configuration. Anything clickable should be clearly discernible. Similarly with the New button.
- I don't like the dropdown replacing the tabs. One extra click.
- Tabs in dialogs like adding firewall filters have been replaced with collapsible sections. This is a disaster. Extremely worsened workflow. Not helped by the annoyingly laggy scrolling.
- Cancel should be next to Apply and OK in dialogs. Not sure about the Remove button. It's kind of awkwardly placed and not greatly visible.

Dear Mikrotik,
Winbox is (was?) primarily PC software yet this new GUI somehow looks like it's made for portrait mode devices - phones/tablets.
By far most of the PC displays have much more space/resolution in width than in height, so (horizontal) tabs are a natural choice.
Every single modern web browser has horizontal tabs just because of that FACT.
So.... why did you remove them and make everything vertical?
Right now I'm more surprised than disappointed - you made such a weird decision.
I hope you can do something about that.

Missing "Safe mode" is a no-go for more serious work - especially working with devices on remote locations.

2 more observations:

- skins do not seem to work for Winbox 4 (I had QuickSet disabled in skin - it is hidden in Winbox3 but available in Winbox 4)
- there's no way to see which windows are currently open (old Winbox has "Windows" menu for that)

Inefficient use of space in layouts is already mentioned. In addition there are no way to close Action or Configuration panes in right side of a window (which is replacing buttons in top row button(s) of Winbox 3 e.g. Settings in "Bridge" window or Default in IPv6 -> ND -> Prefixes window). That is wasting layout space.

Nice to see an update. In the main it seems to work well, but...

1 - <esc> doesn't work any more - closing a whole bunch of panels is now more time consuming and frustrating (the escape key is in the same place on all my keyboards, the shift/control keys aren't).

2 - Comments aren't shown by default - again, more time/frustration in enabling them. Comments are important!

3 - Status tool-tips aren't shown when you hover the mouse over them like they were on Winbox3 (see screenshot) - There doesn't seem to be an easy way to find out what all the letters mean. Screenshot 2024-08-29 083013.png

4 - Removal of the tabs at the top of the panels and using a drop box instead makes navigating the options/contents more time consuming and frustrating - it's no longer easy to see what all the sub-categories are and no longer possible to quickly flip between subcategories.

5 - 'Configuration' takes up a chunk of the right hand side of each panel - it means I have to make the window wider and means more scrolling on smaller screens (like the tiny laptop I use on customer sites) - again, more time required and more frustrating.

6 - <ctrl>+<tab> doesn't work any more - no longer easy to move between panels.

7 - <ctrl>+m doesn't work any more - much more time consuming to add comments (double-click line, click in comment box, type comment and then back to the mouse to click on 'OK')

8 - <Num-> and <Num+> no longer enable/disable rows

9 - <Del> does work (deletes row), but <Ins> doesn't (insert row)

Sorry about the above, it does sound like I'm having a moan, but it does seem that while Winbox3 has its limitations, one thing it was very good at was giving fast access to changes and also seeing required information. Winbox4 seems to have slowed down the workflow not just a bit, but quite a lot. For this to be usable, day to day, I need much more keyboard control - bring back the shortcuts!

I do appreciate that this is a beta release, but please please add in more functionality to speed up the workflow - don't make me frustrated by forcing me to use my mouse when a keyboard shortcut would make an action much faster.

For example, to open NAT rules and add a comment to a row (where "¬" means toggle between keyboard and mouse)...
Winbox 3 - <click><click><click><click>¬<ctrl>+m[type comment]<enter>
Winbox 4 - <click><click><click><click><double-click><click>¬[type comment]¬<click>

All that having been said, Winbox4 certainly looks smarter.

The sad fact is, that almost everything negative mentioned in this thread, will not be taken into account. Or if it will, it will be after 4-5 years of user frustration. That's the MirkoTik way, unfortunately.

I really, REALLY hope, that v3 will be supported by ROS for many years to come.

Not a fan of the flat/low contrast interface. I want buttons to be recognizable as buttons, not look like labels that make me guess whether they are clickable or not.

Also, the lack of tabs is a downgrade. I will stay with v3.x for now.

Looks nice! Some bugs/comments:

[Tested on Windows 11]
- I use a password protected list of Routers - in WinBox4 the password of the last connection gets autofilled without needing password after WinBox restart.
- Maximise WinBox, close WinBox. Restart => WinBox starts as a non-maximised window, but with the full screen size.
- Internal subwindows/dialogs: They should open in the center if they don't have an old stored position/size
- The scrollbar is almost invisble, I like to be able to see quickly that I can scroll:

- Scrolling in Interface Properties is slow/jerky
- I'm not a big fan of this dropdown, but maybe I'll get used to it

Grouping, we use groups to "GROUP" customers together then notes to identify what the routers are. This is the biggest one!
The actions menu on the right, with detect internet should go someplace else, not good to have lots of blank screen real estate. Or have the ability to collapse it.
VLANS and VRRP are not sorted. I.e. you can't tell what interface the vlan belongs too. or what interface the vrrp belongs too
No master/backup on vrrp.
does not load large routing table. Super slow.
no more escape to close window?

but comment does not import from the old version, It also does NOT give me two fields to sort customers and routers by. I open up winbox 4 and I get a list of saved .. user and address, and comments that don't show who they belong too. also if i turn on inline comments i don't' see them in the main screen.

Maybe what would or should have happened is the groups should have been converted to workspaces? thoughts?

Routing table is 2.5 mill currently. I get 51 routes after 20 seconds, 61 after 25, 74 after 30.. Super slow.. don't know if that is by design, I really don't want to see the entire routing table.. Also locks up the program trying to get routes. Maybe this is just in v6.. v4 goes quicker. CTL_SHIFT_W.. ICK.. three keys instead of one. just give me the ESC back ? or maybe options!!! ?

I don't have a command button so ? what do i use? windows W opens widgets on windows.

This is a big problem. It can be temporarily "mitigated" by unchecking "Keep password" but this field is reactivated when using any of saved list entries so there does not seem to be a good way around this problem.

Btw integrated update mechanism is missing as well - but that might not be possible to do in same way on all platforms (?)

Not to mention ridiculousness of monitoring 2.5 M routes in winbox, winbox 4 is not slower than winbox 3 (loads 400k routes in few minutes on a router with 5.5 M routes).
So for the bottleneck of the problem " 51 routes after 20 seconds" is not the winbox itself.

The new interface is not contrast, it's much harder to get information now from the screen.
I'd like to have some kind of window management. I.e. add open window titles to the top bar (where Workspace). So it will be like a Windows taskbar then.

I've had another look at this, I know what it is now. Take Firefox for example, when you put your pointer on the page the scroll bar illuminates more (dark Mode), when removed it dulls down again. then when you goto the scroll bar to use it, it gets even brighter. So that would be 3 settings. Idle,active curser on page,using the scroll bar!

Moving the mouse pointer over the side menus results in very slow/laggy behavior. Noticeable delay in menus expanding like IP, SYSTEM, TOOLS, etc...

Clicking entries in open windows is intermittently slow and delayed. For example, if you open Interfaces and click on an interface it will not highlight the selected interface for up to 2-3 seconds.

The same behavior is experienced if you click the dropdown menu in an open window. The dropdown is intermittently slow to appear and then when you move the mouse through the submenu choices, it is very slow/laggy.

Dragging open windows throughout the workspace is slow and delayed.

The behavior is experienced at different zoom levels, both dark/light modes, and with the resource panel both shown and not shown. As stated, the behavior seems to be most prevalent when the window is maximized. Things seem to smooth out if you decrease the window size.

Monitoring the WinBox process in Activity Monitor shows that there is upwards of 30% CPU usage and very low GPU usage. The CPU utilization of the process jumps significantly as windows are opened and closed, and windows are dragged across the workspace.

Couldn't believe my eyes. Native on all three platforms. Nice job!! Also looks very good, and fact that its not an electron app is refreshingly amazing.

Few notes:

* On linux (at least on my pc) it uses around 800mb of ram, which is quite a lot, while on mac with same windows open - ~260mb.
* Dark mode needs a bit more contrast between background and inner windows
* On mac Cmd + W closes inside windows which is awesome, but on linux Ctrl + W does not do that.
* Disconnect button is not obvious, how about a red color for the button?
* How do we check for updates? :)

Overall nice to see a modern interface and native app on all platforms.

Ctrl+Shift+W to close a window is ridiculous, too complex and unintuitive. All modern browsers use just Ctrl+W for that (at least on Windows) and I believe many people are already familiar and comfortable with that combination. Can we get it supported in the WinBox as well?
As others have pointed out already, lack of gridlines is a pain. Can we get at least the vertical lines back, please?

EDIT: - how do we activate SAFE MODE O.O ??

- missing the "Find" text field to quickly highlight saved routers
- missing the "Show Categories" for saved routers
- "Enter" key does not work when i tried to apply a change (e.g. a wg peer) -> i had to CLICK the "Apply" button
- "F6" key to swap through opened windows inside a WBox session does not work anymore
- "F4" key as an alternative to "Esc" or the new way "CTRL + SHIFT + W" does not work anymore

- missing a requested feature for Winbox Hotkey Support (a bummer :( ... ) viewtopic.php?p=1076997#p980023

You got the name wrong, it's not WinBox now, it's MacBox. It's too linux-like, it should be Windows, it would be better to create a UWP application. And in general, please make just a Wine wrapped application on Windows with a black theme, that would be enough. You didn't have to do that.

Yes, why CMD+W on Mac OS but off-standard CTRL+SHIFT+W??? All browsers use CTRL+W for closing tabs/windows. People are used to this shortcut very well

This is because in the Terminal window maybe you have SSH into some Linux system and running VIM, Terminal listens to all shortcut keys. CTRL+W is "eaten" by terminal

I was planning to ask for this feature even for old Winbox, but now since development of new version is in progress there is more sense to implement in this version.

Can you please add Terminal icon on window title bar (for configuration section windows) which will open Terminal at path of configuration section.
Something like this:

Similar like OS file managers have menu item to open Terminal for directories/folders.

This will speed up executing CLI commands for several reasons, like - no need to write full path or go to path before running commands in specific configuration section, non experienced ROS users will immediately know full path of some configuration section presented in Winbox...

Not a crucial thing but our Hungarian characters are not shown correctly at names, comments. I try to avoid every students of mine to use them, but even I as a trainer make such a "mistake" sometimes :)

I would much prefer and additional click to close the terminal window. Please-please-please make Ctrl+W work with non-terminal windows.

First of all, thanks for the Linux version, this is a real step forward.

First beta issue I encountered: copy & paste does not work, e.g. I can't paste my password: the app freezes for a few seconds, then returns to life with nothing pasted. As a result I have to write out passwords etc. by hand, it's doable but a bit tedious. This is on OpenSuSE Tumbleweed running KWin Wayland with KDE Plasma 6.1.4.
Works fine on Fedora 40, KDE spin. Run it from terminal and see what log say.

- Is there a way to move the lower horizontal bar (system resources) to the top? I'm kind of used to see it there :)
- I agree on having tabs back, dropdowns are not so good.

How is this related to WinBox? I don't get it. I can open as many SSH connections with open VIM instances as I like. I can still use "CTRL + W" to close my tabs in Firefox. I really don't understand the answer from you, Normis.

One workaround would be that you must click with mouse on Terminal window to be able to type, but I guess many will not like this. People expect possibility to start writing immediately when switching windows.

With Winbox3, <esc> has no effect on the terminal panel. I'd be happy if <ctrl>+w had no effect on the terminal panel in Winbox4 in the same way (well, ideally it would be <esc> rather than <ctrl>+w, but if it has to change, it has to change) - at least the behaviour would be consistent between Winbox3 and Winbox4.

Ah, I see your misunderstanding. OK. I'll take that statement back. I was suggesting that I would find Winbox3's behaviour (i.e. close all panels EXCEPT terminal with <esc>) better than using <ctrl>+w. I absolutely was NOT suggesting that <esc> should close terminals.

- I use a password protected list of Routers - in WinBox4 the password of the last connection gets autofilled without needing password after WinBox restart.
This is a big problem. It can be temporarily "mitigated" by unchecking "Keep password" but this field is reactivated when using any of saved list entries so there does not seem to be a good way around this problem.

I found "kind-of-mitigation" to this problem for now - just untick "keep password" field before quitting Winbox. This way (without clicking anything else before closing) password field will be empty on next launch and saved entries will retain their saved passwords.

Other related issue is inability to set/change address list password ("master password" in WinBox 3).
