5g outdoor as a backup connection

Tue Sep 24, 2024 3:10 pm

hi
My intention would be to get a 5g router as a backup connection, however, when I looked at Mikrotik's selection, 5g routers aimed at outdoor use do not seem to be available. My intention was to build a 5g router on top of ltap or wap r ac, the modem of which could be changed to a better one if necessary, but the devices seem to be eol.
Does mikrotik have plans to bring a 5g router or router board intended for outdoor use to which we could connect a 5g modem and antennas

You could ask sales@mikrotik.com but they usually don't provide a lot of info on their roadmap.
Maybe your distributor could have some more leverage to obtain this info ?

It would be great if Mikrotik sells 5G modems only so we can for eg. replace 4G modem in ATL for 5G one. If that is possible, drivers exists in ROS so that shouldn't be a problem.

Only thing that could be a show stopper would be modem interface.

No 5G outdoor cellular modems from MikroTik at this time. There are outdoor 4G LTE available, SXT or wAP enclosure options, etc.

Or you have to build your own using a 3rd party enclsoure. We've had some success with MikrotTik 4G LTE for some customers. [ATT]. However, been moving outdoor cellular backup to another vendor solution.

I contacted sales and they told me the following
Hello,

Thank you for contacting MikroTik Support.

Ltap and Wap are not EOL, but won't be the best options as there might not be enough space inside.

It would be better to use L23UGSR-5HaxD2HaxD as a base for 5G modem, as you can create your custom case and pace this router outdoors. We made some tests recently with 5G modem, and real life speeds could reach up 300-600mbps, which is pretty decent for such setup.

We do have plans for outdoor 5G products, but it takes time to develop and test the new products, so we can't disclose any information.
L23UGSR-5HaxD2HaxD seems promising for this project and it would be great if they are coming out with 5g products for outdoor use. As I recall, some users on the forum have installed 5g modems in mikrotik routers, what modems have you used, apparently I also need a m.2 minipcie adapter

According to the wiki, Quectel's 5g modems would be supported and, for example, Quectel's rm520ngl would be functional.
My intention is to install the L23UGSR-5HaxD2HaxD outside, where can I find a suitable case for it

Do you have experience with their cases yourself, the site seems to only specialize in antennas, I don't see them having cases for routers

Quwireless produces various antennas compatible with Mikrotik routerboards, for example: https://www.quwireless.com/product/qumax-mikrotik-rbxxx , you’d need to check which exact routerboards are compatible
.
