RBFTC11 switching from Gbps to 100Mbps

Fri Sep 27, 2024 12:24 pm

Hi all,

I have this fibre to ethernet media converter. Currently Its connected to a Fritzbox, but I want to change the firewall to a different model.

The Media converter is next to the router, so I have the fibre cable -> Attic -> Media Converter -> 20cm brand new patch cable -> POE adapter -> Router

I have also tried multiple new patchcables, but I keep experiencing sometimes by FritzBox ROuter drops back to 100Mbps, after unplugging the POE adapter and re-plugging it its back to Gbps.

For a test I connected the media converter to a linux box with pppoe installed, and I can only get 100Mb - dmesg tells me it drops back from Gbps to 100 "check cable"

Does this happen due to the short patch cable (I guess the converter should be "far away") or is there a known setting I can give to the routers ethernet nic to stabilize the connection?

20cm of cable between two active RJ45 devices indeed seems a bit short. I'd try with a 2m patch cable to see if things change. For this kind of distance a cat5e cable will do (even for multi-gig speeds), no need to go overboard by using cat6+ patch cable.

I have messed about with this (the converter is only 8 months old) - and it seems to be the POE injector's plug....
If I touch it, the ethernet ports light go off and come back on after 2-3 seconds. can you please point out if there is an equivialent part, maybe on amz or something that I can try in exchange?

I purchased one of these double rj45 socket adaptors and now it works like a charm.
