AX3 + mAP and hAP CAPsMAN is possible ?

Sat Nov 02, 2024 8:40 pm

Hello,
Just a quick question.

So far, AC2 used CAPsMAN, mAP [as CAP] and hap Lite [as CAP] as a controller. 6/49/13. Now hAP and Map upgraded to 7.16.1
I wanted to replace the old AC2 with AX3 but I encountered several problems.

From what I read, the new wifi-qcom driver package creates a "new capsman" and is not compatible with mibpse - hAP and mAP are registered in the new CAPsMAN, but the WiFi interfaces do not appear.

I installed the wireless and qcom packages on AX3. From what I see, only one can be activated at a time. At the same time, if I turn off qcom, my AX3 does not show WiFi interfaces - is this normal behavior?

Is there any method apart from Docker to make my AX3 manage its interfaces and the "old" ones on mibpse at the same time?

Not sure you read this page, it's all explained there:
https://help.mikrotik.com/docs/spaces/R ... 8/Wireless
From what I read, the new wifi-qcom driver package creates a "new capsman" and is not compatible with mibpse - hAP and mAP are registered in the new CAPsMAN, but the WiFi interfaces do not appear.
That's logical. Legacy wifi radios can not be controlled by wave2-capsman.

That's normal too. If you install legacy wifi drivers on AX device, you will loose local radios. No drivers, you see ...
But doing so, you CAN use both capsman versions on the same device (legacy wireless and wave2 wifi). But you will still loose local radios on that AX device. So you need to choose.
But since you do not have other wave2 devices in your network, it's a useless option.
Is there any method apart from Docker to make my AX3 manage its interfaces and the "old" ones on mibpse at the same time?
Nope. Not even with Docker.

Personal remark:
Why capsman for controlling 3 different devices if you only have 1 where added benefit of seamless roaming might be applicable (AX3 device, the others don't have that possibility) ?
Once you have all 3 replaced by AX version, reconsider using capsman, wave2-version.

Hello holvoetn,
Thank you very much for your explanation. I saw the table from the link you attached earlier, but in a different place, so I didn't fully understand it. Now I'm clear, thank you :)

My surprise with the interfaces turning off was also due to the fact that I use Unifi APs elsewhere and I can control many types of APs in the controller, both old and new.

Still answering your question

Once you have all 3 replaced by AX version, reconsider using capsman, wave2-version.
This is due to the fact that it is a home network that is expanded over time, which I also treat as an element of homelab. The network was expanded gradually, that's why there are small mikrotiki and AC as the main router, which I wanted to replace with something newer. I didn't expect that the switch to the new AX technology would also force the replacement of older devices. At this point, I will probably return my AX3 to the store and when a better financial moment comes, I will replace all APs.

Thanks again for your help :)
