Greetings!

I think you have the right start, but the amps may be a little overkill. In the US, the max allowable power is 36db (4 watts), but only 30db (1 watt) maximum from the transmitter. The other 6db must be antenna.

With a pro-type sector antenna, the lowest gain is about 14db. Add the 30db (1 watt) amp, that would be 44db. And that would be way illegal here.

I would keep the antennas, drop the amps. With a good antenna, the transmitter power required is low. I use 79mw to 150mw transmitters. Receiver sensitivity is just as important as transmitter power.

Just my opinion...except the legal part.

DON'T use the amps... They will hurt you more than they will help. Instead use high powered cards (XR2 would be a good choice) that have a good receive sensitivity and hook them to high gain antennas. That will get you get you a much cleaner signal than anything with amps.

You'd be transmitting at huge power, laptops would transmit at a weak power. Thus they get a great signal in places you wouldn't be able to hear them at all. It would be bad. Ditch the amp, use good antennas, and reduce the transmit power so they can hear you as well as you can hear them.

Good point, with the weak cards that most laptops have, you don't usually need a ton of power.... however, it usually doesn't hurt to put out a little extra power. Most of what the users will be doing is downloading, so having a little more power going to them doesn't hurt.

Get the highest gain antenna you can, then just set the output of the card to whatever you need to keep it just within the legal limit. :)

1.5km through walls with a laptop built-in card/antenna, good luck, I can't see how you'll possibly get it stable at every user. Not a pessimist, just a realist. Maybe if you replace the laptops cards with highpower/high sensitivity cards you'll have a better chance... Rather run a test with 1 antenna before you lay out all the cost.

The UserManager Wiki pages have help with doing this.
There is a "wizard" in the HotSpot area if you are using WinBox. It will do 90% of the setup for you.
