Can I use port 1 and SFP on hEX PoE ?

Fri Feb 07, 2025 3:34 pm

Hi folks,
I wonder, when I have hEX PoE - RB960PGS
There are SFP and port 1 marked as "Internet" but when I look at the diagram there is 5 port switch and separate SFP connected to CPU
So is it just a "recommended use"? Or is port 1 disabled by the SFP module?
I want to have a little crazy setup with two of them
The first one will have SFP with internet connectivity, and 4 POE devices, and port 1 is planned as an uplink to the next one
The second one will be just as a POE switch + media converter, doing just switching port one as "input", 4 POE ports, and SFP with fiber to insulated domain with POE switch for outdoor cameras.

First, take a good look again at block diagram.

You have SFP port connected directly to CPU.
Then you have 5 ether ports, first connected to a switch chip and then connected to cpu via 1 common bus.

Case1:
it is perfectly possible to use SFP as WAN and then re-use ether1 for something else.

Case 2:
keep in mind since SFP port is connected directly to CPU, there is no HW offloading to switch so all traffic from/to SFP HAS to pass CPU.
Depending on your traffic needs, it may or may not become a bottle-neck then.
Just a heads-up, nothing else.
