RouterOS upgrade for a N00b ;)

Thu Jul 17, 2008 10:51 am

I've started a new thread as all my new questions are off-topic in my old thread.

So here I've been under the impression that RouterOS can only be installed via the serial port on the RouterBoard.

After Normis gave me a heads up, and after seeing this wiki, I'm very pleased one can do a simple "drag and drop" procedure. (ala Windows)

Now my actual question: What about the old RouterOS? What happens to it and do I need to format the NAND storage before installing a new RouterOS?

Or will it just be a RouterOS upgrade? Does this mean the new packages overwrite the old ones?

new packages will replace old ones, the free space will be ~the same as before, it's an actual upgrade. nothing else should be done

FANTASTIC!

So this means I can now seal my CPE's with silicone sealant (hey, just in case of really bad rain) and never worry about taking it down.

Thanks again for the friendly welcome and quick replies. :)

I have created a project log on my home forum in South Africa while spreading the word about the joy of MikroTik hardware!

*Edit* Typo's fixed.

In case something should fail, Serial port is always a good debugging method. Basically your only way out of really big trouble :)

Big trouble would be correct - both my gaming PC and Satellite Pro notebook don't have serial ports!

Great, will see if some of our local online shops stock USB-Serial converters. Better to get one now rather than later. ;)

Upgrade success!

Make sure to check the MD5 checksum first of course. Then dragged and dropped the .npk file into the Files window in WinBox as you said. Only problem is that my random disconnects halted transfer progress at 4.5MB! :? Luckily when the RouterBoard booted, I guess it could not read the corrupted file. On second try, uploaded all 9.5MB of ROS 3.11, then reboot. Took quite some time for the MAC to become discoverable to WinBox. Almost lost it. And of course, the Bootloader has also been upgraded.
