5ghz or 2.4ghz?

neither.

5Ghz is better for longer distance point-to-point links, but for a hotspot - there are more 2GHz devices out there. Depends on what you want

As normis put it, it would vary depending on exactly what you intend to achieve.

2.4ghz is good for a shorter range link and can also get through thin walls etc, but is more commonly used and can suffer a lot of interference if there are lots of other 2.4ghz networks around.

5.8ghz doesn't deal well with any obstructions in its line of sight, but is not as commonly used and has non overlapping channels so is better for backhaul.

i have setup my Mikrotik RB433ah but cant get beyong 1km. what could be the problem?

Thanks so much for your assistance. I have tested the cables with a Meter reader and they appear to 'continue'

Configurations:

Base Station: RB433ah 600MW, 18v - 2A POE, 12dbi Omni, 40ft mast, (Running: AP Bridge, Firewall) Thats the much i know. dont mind me. i am new to Mikrotik. I got a friend to help me configure it.

Client Stattion: DLINK PCI 524 with a 24dbi Grid antenna, 2 Km away on a desktop.

if this dopes not suffice, please ask specifically what i should post as i dont know what u may need 2 help me.

1km should be no problem. I actually have some links that go up to 10 miles (16 km) with the following configs:

base: (water tower about 120 ft)
rb333
2.4 600mw card
13db pac omni
20 ft lmr400 coax
low noise floor (rural area)

client radio: (clear line of site and fresnel zone)
rb411 + 400mw sanao b/g card + 24 db grid + 7 ft coax


I don't generally like to run the links that far. Signal on it was around -79 to -81 w/ -96 noise floor. Typically like to keep distance under 11km. Not doing much 5ghz p-t-multipoint. But the ones I have run around 8km fairly easy. So you should have absolutely no problem with 1 km if everything is setup correctly.


Make sure cable is good and also make sure you have proper antenna port selected (a or b). Also, make sure that your AP is getting adequate power. I'm not much for dlink/linksys clients on outdoor systems. Recommend a 411 board or something else that is rated for outdoor wisp environments (deliberant, tranzeo, ubiquity, etc).

And how you conect a client at 1km and one at 11km at the same antenna? They wont work without nstreme...
