routing headache

Fri Sep 12, 2008 3:47 am

ok this one maybe simple for some but its giving me a headache.
any help is greatly appreciated.

heres the deal.

i have a rb433ah acting as a hotspot server and a pppoe server. its working fine and the net works ok.

now. i want to add a rb333 to the mix. i want ether1 on the rb333 to be the net port and ether2 to give out hotspot access but through the 433ah. so in other words, i want the 333 to be a simple passthrough device. whether something is connected via wlan1 or ether2/3 i want it to all get passed to 433ah.

what i have done so far is i did dhcp client on ether1 (on the 333) and it gets an ip from the 433 just fine however if i plug a laptop into ether2 of the 333 it wont get an ip from the 433.
the only way i can get it to get an ip is if i create a bridge and put ether1 and ether2 together.

pls help!

cylent -

Well you 'discoverd' probably the only method that will work. Possibly, and I will repeat that, possibly, you can setup eth3 as a DHCP relay under DHCP server.... I haven't tried this but the functionality is there....

Alternately you should be able to setup just a standard routed situation between the two RBs and have a hotspot setup on your ether3 (or any interface you have available) and have it go back to the RB433 to get authenticated. What are you using to manage all this - Usermanager or another raduis server or just the Hotspot 'controller' on the RB433?

ok well i managed to get this working and it was rather easy!

for some reason i was having a problem with both routerboards having identical mac addresses for the interfaces. very odd and i have no idea how it happened.
after reseting the mac addresses and each RB having its own proper mac address for its interface i reset the rb333, i made ether1 dhcp client and plugged ether2 into a switch.

everything connected to the switch got an ip from the rb433 and even got the hotspot login page just fine.

so it was smooth sailing then
