Screwed up my license?

Mon Sep 01, 2008 10:39 pm

Hello!

So.. This is the deal. I tried to upgrade my x86 system from 3.10 to 3.13. On the original install I think I used the CD, but now I tried the netboot option with no luck - the TFTP part failed every time. So I burned the ISO, verifyed the image, installed. But under the format the prossess stopped after 7 or 8 dotts, I waited for 15 minutes, rebooted and installed again- this time it worked. The software ID was changed but I did not think much about it at the time, I thought it was becuse BIOS settings and HW had changed since the first install...
So now I have redone the original setup, as I remember it, and reinstalled from CD - same software ID.

Did the failed install prosess do this or is it just different HW configuration?
Anyway to solve this or is the replacement key option the only way to go?
I don`t think the drive is dameged but I`m gonna do a disk check now anyway..

BTW: Old SW ID: VZIX-CXT new HX0I-B2T it`s a lvl6 lic.

All tips and comments is much appreciated!

_________ side note_____
If the replacement key is my only option I`m probably gonna go for a CF install. There is this "Transcend 133X 4GB Compact Flash CF Memory Card"
on dealextreme.com but is this a good card? For the price of 26$

I checked the disk for errors and it`s all good.. I tried two different partition recovery programs and two data recovery programs but no luck in finding the old install..
It only found the new ROS files and some of the old files from before the first ROS install..

So now I`m shure the replacement lic is the only way to go..

Not yet... I`m gonna place my order for a CF card today so I will contact them when I got it on my hands.
Probably gonna exchange some HW in my router while am at it... In the meantime I will do some testing on different HW and put the results in the wiki. Just added Dell GX 260 and 270 to the list yesterday.

IMHO, I believe the software ID is based on the hard drive/storage drive only. If you didn't change the HD, then the software ID shouldn't change.

Well... Yeah.. It has been the same since I screwed it up.. :) I guess it the same type of software licensing used in IBAS expert eraser, it writes back to the floppy the unique ID of the drive to keep track of how many drives has been wiped with the disk. But since the ID changes upon a "non MikroTik format process" I guess that`s where it went wrong. Well it really don`t matter now, I`m gonna go for a 4GB CF card or a 80 GB 2.5" HD anyway. I was stupid enough to start out with a really old 20GB 3.5" HD so it would just be a matter of time I guess.. And I would pay for a transfer licsense anyway.

SOFT-ID is based on storage serial number partly. If you use somthing like eraser or reformat your storage with owerwrite process - soft-id will be changed. I have lost one L4 license such way...

i also have the same problem here. but i'm using USB flash disk kingston as the drive...
before i got reinstalled the mikrotik, my software id is 2YK7-TB0. but after get formatted and reinstalled, i'm surprised that the software id has changed to GW34-60N.

is it possible that software id could be changed to different software id after i format the drive?
how should i do? and i must do license transfer anyway?

To prevent this problem, always use "Netinstall" to format and reinstall your disk. Netinstall will always reserve your software-ID while formatting the drive.
