noise-floor-threshold setting?

Fri May 06, 2005 9:19 pm

Anyone using this? We recently replaced our old karlnet AP's with Mikrotik, and was wondering what exactly the pros of using this setting were? We also use trango and it has a similar setting but never really tested if it makes a difference.

I did read somewhere that it helps the ap determine the proper modulation and speed that it negotiates. Is this true?

Any help shedding light on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

TIA.

It allows you to set the noise floor for your network, so users wont associate with a signal under say -95dBm, if 95 is what you put in the noise-floor-threshold.

If you have a long link with poor signal it will constantly connect and disconnect having to renegotiate its connection speed using up on air time.

That's my understanding of it.

I guess I should explain a little more about why I am asking. We have a point to point link using the atheros ar5212 cards. Signal for the link is -73/-78. According to the receive sensetivity of the atheros card we are using, it should be linked up at 48Mbps on each side. We have the supported-data-rates set up to 36Mbps on each side, but we are seeing in the registration table 36Mbps/9Mbps.

It should be 36Mbps/36Mbps no? I was wondering if setting the noise-floor-threshold setting would some how effect/change the data rates that the two radios link up at?

Does noise floor work properly on MT 2.8.26/27 with prism 2.5 cards (the 200mw Senao flavor)?

Noise floor treshold is a treshold for noise only, meaning that users with signal level -95 will associate even if NFT=80.

how can you tell what the noise level is?

Good question. And if there is such a parameter in registred device properties why not shown in registration-table? Could be very useful. Especially in PtP links.

all other AP softwarehas sig/noise reading.. what good is it to know your signal strength is -68 if you cant tell if the nosie is -70 or -90.. that is a big difference in the acutal SNR.. it could be a 2 or a 22..

can anyone address this issue..

How can you tell your true SNR if you can't tell your noise level? If the area is surround with Trango and canopy, your mikrotik wont show any of their signal in the scan. so if you have a great signal strenght of -55, but the noise is -60, then you have a horrible connection.

IMHO Mikrotik should add an SNR display, which should be technically possible, if other APs using the same radio chipsets are doing so.

Signal strength alone is not enough to determine if a connection is "good" or not -

Noise floor threshold is the same as RSL (Receive Signal Level).
If this feature really works, it is great to improve the data rate.
according the link budget equation, the lowest the RSL or noise floor the better the signal link. However, since it becomes too sensitive, the ap will pick up more noise. To get around it, you have to do some filtering, and using diversity gain.

I put one mikrotik AP with multiple radio in Laguna Seca raceway, It covers almost the entire circuit and the offices.

I'll have to check that out when I'm there for MotoGP! :)

For MotoGP, we might install more since there would be more people outthere. To access the internet, you will need username and password.
