Traffic stops on PPPoE connections

Wed Jul 14, 2004 8:22 pm

We are seeing a strange problem where we have PPPoE clients authenticated and connected and it seems that they will be working fine for a random period of time and then suddenly the traffic will stop but the interface is still connected. We are assigning addresses from a pool and using radius for auth. If I manually drop the interface, the connection doesn't re-establish until the equipment is reset a few times. I would say it's customer premise equipment but it happens on different brands/models of equipment. It would seem that Linksys routers are the worst offenders. We are also using D-Link and tranzeo with PPPoE. Has anyone else observed this behavior. All of our PPPoE connections are over wireless point-to-multipoint. Does PPPoE deal with signal instability?

We are not using PPOE but I had a severe problem with Tranzeo CPE on one occassion where they would work for a few minutes then stop passing traffic. I was installing 8 of them for a school campus. I was using Microsoft 4-port routers with the CPE but never sure if they were part of the problem. I was pulling my hair out, never sure whether it was the Miktotik, the Tranzeo or the Microsoft routers. I finally swapped the Tranzeo for Motorola Canopy and the problem went away, but I have since used the Tranzeo elsewhere (with a MT router) and they seem to be working fine.
