i'm evaluating the routerboard hardware with the Mikrotik software but need to know one ting. i'd like to use it in a school environment and need it to filter all chat type traffic. i've purchased several Mikrotik/routerboard units but have not played with traffic shaping. the problem is the students keep using chat instead of doing their distance learning work and each time i block a chat site in IE, they simply use a different chat site. i need to know if the Mikrotik solution can be set up to detect and filter all chat type traffic. it would also be nice to automatically detect and filter porn, warez, etc., type sites. is this possible?

i reviewed the manual but it isn't clear to me if this is possible and if so, how to set it up.

Well as soon as you will be able to distinguish necessary traffic from unnecessary you will be able to block it.

1) use IP firewall filters to eliminate unnecessary services (ports and protocols) and addresses

2) use transparent Web-proxy to restrict homepages.

3) try to find Layer-7 example, to block some specific traffic

MT has whole set of things


But I suggest to use Hotspot and log all the traffic. This way students will have to register with unique username and password so they will be traceable and not so willing to do wrong things.
