Problem with bgp advertisement

Fri Jun 24, 2005 8:51 pm

We have been using bgp and are using only the bgp network feature to advertise class Cs but it seems our router 1.1.1.1 (AS9999) -- name changed is advertising everything to our peers

Our setting routing bgp print

Hello nikhil,

This may be a dumb question, but are you using the Prefix Lists/Rules? I believe this is the only method MikroTik offers in order to influence your BGP traffic.

Hello MikroTik,

Have there been any BGP improvements or enhancements? Didn't John Tully mention v2.9 was going to include BGP improvements?

Best,

Brad

I tried prefix lists but no advantage.
IT doesnt work.

I cannot put 2.9 in production (still beta) I am using 2.8.24 and bgp works fine but our upstream tells us we advertise the whole internet to them . They have to inturn use filter list to take only those ip ranges that we are supposed to advertise. Over a 100mbps and GIGE link I know this is not a lot but then I thought it still is work for the router so to take the load off it is important.

I wish somebody can point us in the right direction.

Agreed, I didn't personally setup the prefix lists in our routers, but I know they do work. Also, any BGP changes in MT require the BGP service to be stopped and restarted. This is a REAL pain and I hope MT fixes this in v2.9.

Best,

Brad

So Prefix List changes also require MT to be restarted ?

Not that i am aware of. You might want to configure hold-time and keepalive time. I had to go in the other way to setup advertisement-interval to make sure changes in network list got propogated.

First off, you get more settings if you access it from terminal/telnet/ssh. command line seems to give you access to a few extra minor settings.
Atleast you'll get keepalive and holdtime configured which are very necessary. But how to access it "the other way" is the same as you would access quagga/zebra (remember that your firewall rules might block you). This is almost certainly an unsupported feature. Some settings can make your bgpd die and never resurface!! (Reinstalling routing package has sometimes helped).
