Routerboard How-To articles?

Mon Apr 06, 2009 11:13 am

Hi all,

I've just bought 2 routerboards (433 and 411) that I'm planning to use to connect the office LAN with home. Well, the thing is, I'm completely at a loss as to the setup and all. The manual I downloaded from routerboard.com doesn't really help, and mikrotik's Wiki articles on routerboard are mainly for the troubleshooting and RB500 something...

Can someone point me to the correct articles to do what I wanna do please?

Thanks much.

Oh? I'm sorry, I guess I'm not being clear enough.

I'm trying to connect the two RBs, so basically I just need articles related to wireless radios, connecting 2 (or more) RBs, the likes. My experience in connecting multiple wireless radios is, sadly, limited to the various DLink products, so it's much, much simpler.

The articles at the link you gave me are mainly for setting up the routerOS, no? Bandwidth control, firewall, etc. I need something more related to the RB, or wireless radios, itself.

well RouterOS (software) is what's inside your RouterBOARD device (hardware) so yes, those are the articles you need.

start with:
http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/First_time_startup

also you can read this about wireless:

Dang...

I missed the "wireless" link on the main Wiki page. Turns out there ARE several articles on the issue on that section. My bad, my bad...

Well, I'll try reading the articles, and I'll be back when I'm stuck.

Sorry for the trouble. And thanks for giving me that link, Normis.

Problem with omni antenna.

Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:04 pm

Yay! They are connected! Thank you so very much. I did the one with EoIP.

Anyway, I came across a problem when I was setting the connection up. Well, more like "will" come across a problem soon in the future...

Here's how:
All of the articles mainly spoke of connecting -TWO- radios/networks only. Well, the company I worked for have several branch offices that are pretty close to each other, about 2-5km each from the main office, and my boss wants to connect all of them to the main office. He wants each building to connect -only- to the main office, but not to each other (I want to keep each branch office separated from each other). An application in the main building's server will then decide which information should be passed to the other branch office. Anyway, instead of using point-to-point connections from the main office to each branch office, I'm thinking of using another R52 miniPCI card connected to an omni antenna for the main building and several grid antennas on the surrounding buildings, pointing to the omni antenna. Much more cost-efficient that way, no?

The question is: "How do I set it up?"

With the one I have now (the EoIP), the two radios can only speak to each other, since I have to enter the other radio's IP address in the config, am I right? I've been doing some readings on WDS, and from what I read -so far-, it seems like I wouldn't be able to use it for this situation, since "WDS also requires that every base station be configured to forward to others in the system" (that's from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_D ... ion_System). Do correct me if I'm wrong though. There might be some advanced settings on WDS to solve my problem, I dunno...

Any ideas on this issue will be greatly appreciated.
WDS, non-WDS, anything else at all.

you have basic setup - one AP that all the other sites are connected to. In your case - main office is your AP place.

so you can simple add more stations that connect to your AP
