Weird Issue with 10Mbps vs 100Mbps

Thu Apr 02, 2009 7:46 pm

We are working with a backhaul link and running into a very weird issue.

Side A - RB433 SR5 w/ WDS

Side B - RB433 SR5 w/ WDS (Backhaul) also SR5 acting as 5.8 AP
RB433 2 R52H serving 2.4

We directly connect the two routerboards together. Everything works, we get an IP from side A and are able to pass Internet Traffic. However when the Ethernet Link is set to 100Mbps Auto Negotiate Full, 300k to 400k is the maximum it will download at and 1.5Mbps is the avg. Upload speed. (Now here is the weird thing) We switch the link to 10Mbps Full Duplex and the link will pass 7Mbps Down and 7Mbps Up or basically maximum what we have on side A.

I don't get it.. I've changed everything now and still the same issue! We changed the routerboards, the wireless cards, the power supplies and the Ethernet runs on the Tower. We have this same setup in another area and don't have this issue??

I thought is might have been an issue with the two routerboards communicating with each other at 100Mbps but we directly connect a laptop to the backhaul board and same exact issue, once we set it to 10Mbps it releases and let's all the bandwidth through.

Anyone have any ideas on what we are doing wrong here? Thanks

when you say you connect the two boards together directly, are you meaning with wired connection? or over wireless?

I recall a funny issue with speeds over a cat 5 from board 50 feet POE cat 5, and really ODD issues with connectivity, and eventually could not connect at all.

Problem was wrong wireing of cat 5, had POE twisted with a data line, and caused alot of issues. Cant recall all of them, but it did initially connect with winbox, transffered data with no problems, at some point the connection via wired to the board could not say connected, and kept dropping the link, but the network light was still on.

Possible reason was this was at a remote site, temporary construction office in the middle of no-where, innitially it was run on a HONDA rv generator, had clean power, then we swtiched to a smaller honda 650, which I think didn't have as clean of power and cuased the issues, combined with the wrong pairing on the POE/cat5.

p.s. Its cool to have high speed internet in the middle of a forest, with nothing around.. well, except for that noisey generator.

The POE runs going up the tower are approx 150'. At the bottom of the tower we connect the two radios together via a 2' patch cable. We are using standard B Cat5e wiring.
