I had a similar problem, and it was because the key I had been using was for a RB532, even though it worked in version 2.8......

I wasn't using a Routerboard, either... That was my point. I had been incorrectly given a Routerboard serial number to use on a PC based MT. The Routerboard serial number worked when using version 2.8, but would fail when I tried to upgrade to 2.9.....

Now I am using various release candidates of 2.9... It was only two machines that I had your problem on, though, as it was two license keys that were improperly generated for me. Once I got the corrected license keys and installed them, the two systems upgraded to 2.9 just fine. I don't know that your problem is the same as mine was, but I could identify my problem by viewing "system license" and it would say that the license level was "2.6.1" or some rediculous number..... It definitely did not say "Level 5", which is what it should have said.....

There is no standard update procedure that looses your license. If your update period has not expired, then any upgrade should keep your license. There is no special procedure to keep your license, it does it automatically. If your system does not keep the license, then you have a bad key(like I did) or you have already gone past your upgrade date. Please tell us what your system says when you do a:
/system license print

I have performed upgrade without problem. Telling the true, I was surprised. Before upgrade I forgot to take attention to license and what happen during installation of the new version.

I used netinstall. Using netinstall I booted old MT with 2.8.27 using bootp feature of network adapter and after, I installed new version 2.9rc6 as it would be a new MT. I was surprised that after rebooting the new 2.9rcl there was original license present and glad to MT that they are so smart that they take attention to this fact.
