I can only see the idea for Bluetooth Serial ports and connecting cellphones (Modem and SMS).
But the pain of not having a 100% reliable connection, is more frustrating than using a cable...

Agreed, it isn't a substitution for WiFi, but it is a suitable alternative to a wired USB or serial connection.

The most obvious example I can think of is using Bluetooth to link (tether) a cell phone to a RouterOS box allowing the phone to be used as a modem "wirelessly". In this mode, the functionality could theoretically be the same as if it were plugged in via USB or serial.

I personally don't need this feature, but can easily see how it could be useful in some cases (like an in-car PAN to WiFi gateway - for mobile event hotspots, law enforcement, amongst others).

Have you aver used Bluettoth besides file transfer? It can substitute WiFi perfectly. BT connection allows devices to access Internet in similar manner as WiFi connection. There is no functional difference.

I was working on a ebedded system with linux an Bluez stack to send multimedia messenges to all mobile phones with active bluetooth, but i have not skill programming in C and I could only do small tests.

I think it might be an interesting function....

We use RouterBoard as unified wireless communication platform connected to 2G, 3G, WiFi and Satellite Services. Our implementations in Ports, Terminals and Production environments more and more also demanding bluetooth since maly PLC systems and their user panels do not use WiFi anymore but Bluetooth instead. They only need 20m radius and have less issues with overlapping, inband interference etc. So, from a professional perspective it is worth looking at it.
