Reduce tx-power

Tue Aug 09, 2005 12:15 pm

Hello,

which radio cards support a continuously variable adjustment of the tx-power? Did this feature depends on the used hardware or is this only a routerOS issue?

I want to build a legal link (2.4 and 5.7 Ghz) , so i need high rx-sensitivity and low tx-power with high-gain antennas. the question now is what is the best hardware/software combination for this.

I think of the atheros based CM9 cards an the prism based senao 2511 cards together with routeros.

Tobias.

The Atheros chipset card's driver will let you set the output power to anything you want(within range) by simply typing it in. I have only briefly experimented with the Prism radios, but did not see any obvious way to alter it's output power. There was an option in the Prism configuration for "antenna gain" or something, but the Atheros cards also have an "antenna gain" setting, and that is not their primary place to adjust the output power....

I had also noticed in the MT RouterOS documentation that there are some special issues that need to be considered, or things that may not work properly when using a Prism card...

Again, I am not an expert on the Prism card, I just thought I'd throw in some help, since no one else had answered... :)

If you read here and on other systems forums - you will see CM9s are highly regarded..

I don't think you will go far wrong with atheros CM9..

Hope this helps..
Prism is not a flexible etc..

The **only** problem is CM9s as APs is not the best solution, unless the client is also a CM9. In that situation, it seems best to have CM9 to CM9 for backhaul, and a Prism card for AP - and many 'consumer' devices will connect easily to Prism.

I'm using atheros as an AP under 2.9 and whatever tx power you set it, the signal from all clients it's the same.

Also prism seems to not be well supported
