EOIP over PPTP

Thu Nov 05, 2009 6:01 am

Hello,
I have two LANs that I would like to connect utilizing a MT router on each end. There is a Linksys router between the MT at both locations, with the MT set to DMZ on the linksys. My PPTP apears to work, as I can ping PCs on both ends. I configured an EOIP tunnel on both MT routers following the help files. My issue is that the EOIP does not seem to work. I can ping from one office to the other whether the EOIP and Bridges are enabled or disabled. I can even launch a Remote Desktop Connection from one office to the other, but I cannot browse shares (by typing 192.168.2.x in the address bar). Is there something I am missing here?

Did u bridge the EOIP interfaces to the ethernet interfaces on each MT?

In addition I have just noticed that I cannot ping the remote liksys routers either. For example, at each office I have <DSL Modem> -- <Linksys> -- <MT>. I can create the PPTP tunnel to the MT, and ping all the PCs on the LAN, but I cannot ping the Linksys from the remote office. It may also help to mention that all my LAN PCs are connected physically to the Linksys routers. My intention for the MT equipment is specifically EOIP.

Thank you for your time.

you prob cannot ping the linksys coz the firewall is blocking it...it's a setting that u need to enable on the linksys itself but it's not an issue

Please draw us a picture of your setup and differentiate between wired and wireless links and upload it...

There are no wireless components on this network. Thanks.

Please post ip ranges that are have configured...

Can you connect the lan PC's directly into the Mikrotik and bypass the linksys?

I would like to keep the network setup as it is, as I am trying to keep my impact on the existing infrastructure to a minimum. I have setup my routes as 192.168.2.x to 192.168.80.1 and vice versa. Linksys is DHCP server on both networks. I have my client PCs setup with MT as gateway, and a route on the MT 0.0.0.0 > linksys.

Turn off DHCP on one of the linksys. If both remote lan's get a lease then we know the EOIP tunnel is working and we can trouble shoot further

Also, do a traceroute from a 1.x pc to 2.x pc to make sure that the EOIP tunnel is used and not the pptp, might be a routing issue

Ok, my tracert goes from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.1.100 (MT) to dest. The ip for the PPTP tunnel does not show up. I have done some more troupleshooting, and I can access a PC at 192.168.1.x from 192.168.2.x, but not the other way around. I have triple checked all of my routes, and the settings are identicle on both linksys.

Then the EOIP is working perfectly. Check the firewalls on the PC's themselves...It's quite common that they are blocking filesharing

Ok, thank you for your help. When I went back to check the firewall settings, all remote PCs showed up on the network. Not exactly sure what happened, but everything seems to be working now.

Upon futher review, it is still not functioning entirely correct. My DHCP for the entire network is comming from 192.168.2.1. This creates a problem when a PC on network 192.168.1.0 connects to the internet. All of my PCs on both sides of the tunnel are picking up 192.168.2.x IPs, and using 192.168.2.1 as the gateway. This makes browsing the internet on one end of the network incredibly slow, as it is using the distant router as a gateway. Is there any way to fix this, with another route perhaps?

hmmm that would happen...Well you can turn on both DHCP's now...Was just checking that the EOIP was functioning, which it is.

The issue is definetly a routing problem if the setup does not work with 2 DHCP servers but only 1.

Post you "/ip route print" configs for both Mikrotiks
