Redundancy for PPPoE and User Manager

Sat Nov 14, 2009 2:50 am

I'm wanting to set up a pair of mikrotik routers as the core routers for a WISP of about 1000 subs. I can use VRRP to cover the routing portion, but what about redundancy of the PPPoE and User Manager portion? Can the routers be load-balanced at the same time?

There is no built in database replication for User Manager. You'd have to put together a series of scripts that export the database and transfer them to the other router, which then imports it.

VRRP has the concept of master and backup routers, so you wouldn't have both routers active at the same time unless you split your users over two interfaces and ran VRRP on both, with one router being the default master for the first and the other for the second - this is dangerous in regards to resources as each router must be able to support all users in case of a failure, so you might just as well just run all users on one router at all times. Since PPPoE deals with IP endpoints, as long as clients are configured to use the virtual address as an endpoint you should be covered. However, the PPPoE database also does not have built in replication so you'd have to handle it manually just like with User Manager.

HI,

is it possible to discribe this in detail? I think this could be exectly what i need. We are in the same situation that we need a redundancy of the usermanager.
