IP routing on an MPLS network

Mon Nov 23, 2009 2:10 pm

Hi Guys

I've got my MPLS networking running and I am using VPLS for pppoe customers which works fine

But now I want to use MPLS label switching for normal IP traffic.....Do I need to create traffic engineered tunnels between each highsite and manually mangle and then route traffic over the TE tunnels?

I initially thought that IP traffic uses MPLS by default but if I do a torch on an MPLS switching router then I can see all the traffic includes src and dst address, protocol etc. This confirms to me that normal ip traffic is not using MPLS

I created a TE tunnel and did a ping over the TE interface but the traffic did not come back over the same TE interface...ie it was sending over the TE tunnel but not receiving

TE tunnels are not bidirectional. Pay attention to first paragraph of http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/MPLS_TE_T ... TE_tunnels

As to label switching of "normal IP traffic" - it will "start to be switched" if it is routed on MPLS cloud ingress router using route that has label binding from next hop router.
