External drives as network storage?

Tue Jan 12, 2010 8:03 pm

Hi,

I'm working on a RB433UAH with RouterOS4.4.

I wish to now if there's a change so set external usb disk drives as Network Storages for devices that are also connected to the router and dump data to Network storages. In other words, if an external disk can emulate a NAS.

I read about 3 post asking for NAS support and someone respond that in that case they'll use a computer...but, why? what if i don't want to use a computer?

Thanks in advance,
Regards.

RouterOS does not offer advanced option for saving files on disk management. Yes, you can save data to external HDD, but there is no advanced option to control it.

ok, thanks.

I managed to install openwrt as a metarouter and opkg'ed samba3. Thing works. The metarouter uses the hdd disk, so will adding an external disk or a micro-sd expand the HDD facilities of the mikrotik?

I read the wiki about it and I'm not asking to use the external disk or micro-sd as storages *on* the metarouter. The question is: Does adding external disks or micro-sd's expand the HDD space of the mikrotik? If so, the metarouter has no idea of what is happening in the driver layer and mikrotik export his HDD size as available space.

What I have seen in "resources" is that despite of adding the micro-sd, the HDD size does not increment...but I wanted a profesional opinion about it.

Regards,

PS: Sry the double post. I thougth the post was not sent, and then i realized that is moderated.

When additional store is install, there is no more space in /system resource.
But you have the ability to use external drive space to save files, logs, User Manager/Dude/Proxy data.
