RouterOS licence and broken hardware

Mon Jan 11, 2010 8:34 pm

Hello guys,

I am running RouterOS V4.4 on an X86 Machine, and everything seems to be running as expected... for now.
As a precautionary measure, I would like some advice as to what I should in the following scenario, which I think is about to happen soon.
The PC Hardware seems to be failing with a few BIOS errors, and sometimes HDD errors, it takes about 3 physical reboots for the system to come back online.

How do I back up my licence?

If I want to change my hardware, ie: Hard drive, Motherboard, CPU and memory is the licence restricted?
I was told the licence is determined by the NIC and the current NIC is onboard.

Any advise would be appreciated. As I do not want to lose the licence I have already paid for.
Thank you

only your harddrive is licensed. if you replace harddrive - you must buy new license

That's not good, I am currently using an IDE Hard drive, and they are getting more and more difficult to get hold of. So if I was to replace the HDD, are there no exceptions as to retrieve my licence? Afterall, I am making previsions for the event before it happens, trying to make my job easier for when it does happen.

I will try to do a HDD clone, and see if it works.

Thank you

Ok I sent this forum llink to my boss, and this is what he replied.
Regarding your HDD/licence theory... think logically - does a routerboard have a hard drive? I once lost an onboard NIC. Replaced it with PCI NIC, and had to buy new licence - personal experience.... that's how I know!
Any theories?

Thank you

As you can see from the links posted in this thread the license is tied to the hard drive and not the NIC. And while you can nitpick that a RouterBOARD doesn't have a hard drive it does have storage, which the license is tied to. Adding a NIC doesn't require purchase of a new license.

We sell compact flash cards with RouterOS already installed on them. We license the compact flash cards using only one main system. These cards are then installed either in customer owned units or installed into a system we put together.

The license is bound to the storage system the RouterOS partition is installed on.

RouterBOARDS uses another way of calculating SoftID =)

and we use USB drives for our routers - they work at any hardware when we replace it =) so I don't like theories that say it shouldn't fork for years =)

Out of curiosity, how do you install RouterOS on the USB drives?

like on any other drive =) connect it to my Windows computer, run NetInstall, select that drive, select necessary packages, press Install, unmount drive, insert it to the router and boot from that USB drive :)

Gotcha, so you just use the winbox reboot method to upgrade RouterOS on these USB drives then? Just asking as I want to make sure I'm not missing a way to reinstall a RouterOS install on a CF/USB drive connected directly to the netinstall computer without having to also re-license the install.

yes, for upgrade - simply upload necessary files via Windox and then reboot =) in 95% of cases it came back normally =)

anyway, if you use NetInstall only - you won't loose your license. NetInstall works correctly with current soft-id

We just see the worst of the worst here, so I'm used to netinstalling to fix really bad problems. Not that I ever actually use a netinstall upgrade for anything actually out in the field. I just always like to have that as an option in my back pocket if it's necessary.

It's actually good to know that we can use netinstall to reinstall a local drive without having the SoftID change. I haven't had the guts to try it since the new 8 digit SoftIDs came out...is that when this started working or did I miss the change from even before that?

8-digit softid is just another way of calculating old data =)

only other vendors' utilities can erase that data and change softid

I bought Level 6 license. Currently working on an IDE flash drive, on x86 machine.
The new x86 server should I not work with IDE flash, but works with CF memory.
Since the licenses cost $ 250, how to switch to a new CF memory?

I sent a mail to MIKROTIK, but no answer! I wait for 10 days.
Can I transfer the license or not?

Is it enough to send mail 5 times, or send e-mails constantly, until they do not get bored?
