I'm trying to figure something out here... planning on building a private link between two locations, a mere 5km so there shouldn't be hard to get a stable and well performing link.

My idea was to use Routerboard 230 kit with the SR5 cards and 22dB antennas, that should work well right?

However, when I look at routeboards homepage it seems that the Routerboard 532 has more "oomphh" then the 230.... anyone got any ideas about this? Or done any test?

Is it a better solution to go with the RB532 kit (upgrade the OS to level 4, add SR5 with pigtails and add 22dB antennas) or do the RB230 kit have some benefit that isn't obvious?

266MHz Geode board, CM9 radios, RouterOS 2.9.5 - 29Mbps throughput using UDP , 23Mbps TCP using bandwidth test through the router.
5GHz (not turbo) and Nstreme enabled.

You can get 40Mbps with RB532 overclocked to 333MHz, 5GHz Turbo, Nstreme

What kind of distance are your gear on? Type of cards and antennas? What's the signal strength you get?

I need to be able to trust this link even in foul weather...

Those are lab results, but field results very similar.

For 30Mbps throughput, you need 48Mbps modulation rates or 2x24Mbps in Turbo mode.
That implies decent signal levels - so get some good antennas and low loss cables.
There are plenty pf link margin calcs around, we have one if you are interested.

Thanks for your input, I have indeed run quite a few of the link budget calcs but, paraniod as I am, I would like to get some input on "real-world" performance..... been working with comms and computers since '86 and one thing I have learned is that reality and theory rarely agree

Anyone done a 5km link and have some gear/signal strength/weather influence figures they would like to share with me?

The new "Integrated Router Antenna" looks like a sweet package, at a great price to! But how will it perform when there's heavy wet snow?
