RB1100 Hardware Shortage in Australia?

Wed Sep 08, 2010 4:23 am

Does anyone know what on earth is holding up production of the new RB1100's
We were initially told by our distributor weeks ago to expect them start of October and now this has been pushed back another Month to first week of November?
We need a Gigabit capable router with more than 3 ports and faster CPU. Bit annoying as this is now holding up two projects.
Bit of an oversight to phase out the 1000 and 1000u before having production up on the new model!

Anyone have info??

I know that the situation in Europe is about the same - but we still get October shipping date estimations...
If you can somehow work with three Gigabit ports, then you might want to try the RB 800,
it has the same CPU and throughput capabilities as a RB1100. A RB450G will probably not be powerful enough if
you consider a RB1100 :)

I'm actually looking at http://www.axiomtek.com.tw/products/Vie ... p?view=825
Will be more expensive though probably not an issue in this category as I would rather just have something to offer the client.
Quite embarrassing when you talk a product up to a client and then can't deliver though. I especially need Gigabit rackmount and more than 3 ports so don't have many choices.

Combination of global parts delivery problem and unexpected demand. We are working hard to shorten the wait time. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the update Normis, I think that the price point is what has driven demand.

If you consider that customers were paying AUD$1000 for Snapgear and similar the RB1100 for AUD$550-650 seems like a bargain and indeed it is.
As much as the smaller routers in your range are quite powerful for their size they can be a hard sell as they are so small and light + look like toys so we generally go for the bigger routers based on Perception to the customer though in this case for the jobs I need them for I need performance as I'm connecting 3 busy Gigabit LANS so need the grunt.

The only thing I don't like is the fact it's not avail in Black

Don't forget you can run RouterOS on x86 hardware too.

We routinely use higher powered servers with RB1000/RB1100's as backup units as we simply need more processing/routing power than the RouterBoard line can currently offer.
You can get a decent desktop style machine with warranty for around $1000, server for $2000 or build your own for somewhere inbetween.

yeah we are looking to get some of the axiomtek units which we can also use for untangle web filtering, the problem is the delay that all of this creates when you have to go in search of new suitable products that are reasonable priced, look good and can do the required job.

I've actually been talking to one of our major Australian suppliers of RouterBoard equipment about getting some higher end units similar to the Axiomtek ones, in stock and preloaded with RouterOS.

Will post back here if anything comes of it.

Dux, we do pretty much all of our MT purchases through them currently.
Feel free to mention it to mike if you think it's worthwhile them doing it.

Yeah Mike's quite good, have spoken to him a few times. He even put up an article when I worked out how to setup NextG 850Mhz properly on his Duxcell product with the sierra 3G modem :)
What was the specific hardware you were talking to him about?

I sent him something from the product range you linked earlier today however I also asked about 1RU Intel servers (which is what we use currently as they're quicker and easier to source).
Biggest problem is ensuring compatibility and getting RouterOS installed in the first place (removing SAS cards and crap)
