RB750 and blocking websites

Thu Sep 23, 2010 4:57 pm

Hi guys!

I wish to block websites, i have tried quite a few post ideas and wiki's

http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/How_to_Bl ... sing_Proxy

http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17411

http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... ss+command

http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=44809

I think that somewhere in those is the answer im just not sure if im going about this right... can i have a hotspot and make the proxy work on a specific port? like say ether2 has no proxy and ether3 does?

My Setup is as follows:
ADSL Router -> RB750 -> Ether1
Ether2 -> Hotspot -> Everyone

Or should i rather try and do it with ip addresses? Sorry to ask a question i know has been covered a million times but this webproxy stuff is a challenge!

many thanks

Since the proxy works very differently between normally routed networks and Hotspots: are you trying to block access to websites from clients behind a Hotspot, or from clients behind a port that doesn't have a Hotspot on it?

Behind a Hotspot using the walled garden works well. You can match by regular expression, hostname or IP address and block sites there. Behind normal ports you can use the proxy access rules you found. Since you explicitly have to redirect users to the web proxy you can definitely do so based on the port they are behind.
