Inviting all Point Multipoint network owners!

Tue Nov 15, 2005 9:17 pm

Hi There,

I just want to invite all persons to share their experience in having a point multipoint network using the 5.xGHz band.

I'm just curious, independent from what hardware you are using, if there are already are any successfull ISP's using Mikrotik software.

Some questions I have at this point are:

1) In what way differs such a network if you look at a 2.4GHz environment?
2) What are the distances your network can handle? (this one is very difficult to answer, but maybe you could tell how much db's you are using at the station side, and the cpe side)
3) Do you use Nstreme in such an environment?

The reason I'm curious is because we own a 2.4GHz p-mp network and we really want to upgrade. I heard some troubles with ACK time etc. but I never met anyone who already owns a succesfull 5.xGHz network. We already use 5Ghz for PtP, but ofcourse this differs from PtMP a lot.

Hoping to read a lot overhere!

Cheerz!

There are a lot of operators including ourselves using 5Ghz PtMP.

Really not much different than 2.4Ghz PtMP.

Other than the usual fresnal and propagation properties differences between the bands, they operate similarly.

Distance is about the same here because they are both limited to 36dB EIRP in the States.

Distance almost the same?
FSL of 5.8GHZ is about 5-8dbm more than 2.4GHz and 6dbm more is the doble
of the distance ...

If you have have good pigtials and cables the losses are almost the same at
2.4 GHz and 5.8GHz...

So I would say the distance is about the half of 5.8GHz and 2.4GHz at least
at theory ...

Do you have practical infos of signal level of 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz at same distance???

I'm still awaiting some hw stuff to do this test ...

TKMBE is right about the propagation.

But the flip side is that the 5GHz band is relatively "quiet" not full of WiFi, microwave ovens, cordless phones, and other things - so the receiver can operate closer to the theoretical.
In a P2MP scenario this matters even more than P2P, as the BS receiver is "seeing" a 90 or 120deg sector which may have 100's of unwanted transmission sources "visible" in it.

I'm sure the operators here on the forum will comment about the realities here.

Regards
