PCC Load Balancing + External Squid Proxy (CentOS)

Thu Nov 04, 2010 11:29 pm

Hello,
We are a small ISP in a neighborhood in Bangladesh where we have around 1000 users. Previously we have taken our whole bandwidth from one ISP, but due to unstable service we have taken BW from 2 ISP's and implemented PCC load balancing as per Manual. Please see below for more information about our setup:

Mikrotik Version: 3.30

ISP 1:
Interface Name: WAN-DFN
BW Speed: All time (24 hrs) 5mpbs
Gateway: 27.131.15.33
Network: 27.131.15.32
Our IP: 27.131.15.XX
DNS: 27.131.12.2

ISP 2:
Interface Name: WAN-GAL
BW Speed: (12hrs = 2mpbs) another 12 hrs = 5mbps
Gateway: 27.131.15.33
Network: 202.44.109.65
Our IP: 202.44.109.XX
DNS: 202.44.105.8

Proxy:
Interface Name: Proxy
Gateway: 192.168.252.1
IP: 192.168.252.2:3128 (transparent)
Ext Proxy OS: CentOS 5.5
Running Squid version 2.6/Stable

Local LAN:
Interface Name: Local
Gateway: 172.16.0.0/16

As the Wiki manual is only for the load balancing without proxy, everything works fine. But we want to use our proxy server with this configuration. I spent my entire day looking for a decent how-to for PCC Load balancing with external proxy, in fact I found some, but they never work.

If anyone in the community have some experience with this stuff and would like to share their knowledge, I will be greatly benefited.

Thanks & Best Regards,
Saiful

Probably you haven't configured PCC for your Proxy too.
Your Proxy traffic doesn't get processed by the mangle rules of the PCC
so maybe it is not capable of finding a gateway, or at beast it is using
only one gatyeway.

Hi,
Actually I have never configured Proxy with the PCC before. Nor did I mention it in my last post. Thats because I don't know how to do it. So I was hoping that if anyone can give me a HOW-To for such setup. As far as PCC load balance is concerned, I'm quite sure its working, because my WAN's are being used equally.

Edit: My squid configuration is OK, and is operational before when I used only ISP.

Hi saifulmr,

I read in an old post about a T-PROXY, which doesn't change the source address of the packets coming from your LAN, maybe if you implement T-PROXY and make your customers pointing to the T-PROXY and the proxy pointing to the Router that balances the Internet frorm both ISP's you might get your proxy to get involved inside of the LAN...

Thank you for your reply,

But we have been using Squid for a while, and have been very satisfied with its service and reliability. Gives me a strong reason to stay with squid. I am quite sure there must be a way to get PCC load balance work with External Squid, I just can't figure it how. However without the proxy the load balance works just fine.

I believe you do have a rule in NAT to redirect traffic in port 80 to your external Proxy.
Do you see packets going through this rule?
Have you tried to ping internet (for example www.google.com) from your proxy?
