Poor MLPPP performance..

Tue Dec 14, 2010 11:43 am

As title...

I have been running MT for ages (well several years..) and was glad to discover to MLPPP was supported.
However as title.... poor performance.

I am using an x-86 box with a fairly powerful (for MT) CPU - a micro-ATX board etc.
CPU power is not an issue.

I have two 8meg / 800k aDSL lines (both sync at max for the UK and each line will download the maximum theoretical 7.2 meg on its own). It's not an aDSL line issue - or a line throttling issue, as I can sit here downloading at 7.2 megs as I long as I wish on one line....

Running MT 5.0 rc5 (maybe unwise to use a RC but never mind). I setup Bonding via PPPoE and the download peaks around 14 megs but then drops to about half that very quickly. Thus I seem to be gaining nothing bonded - EXCEPT the upload is always ok - it doubles and goes to 1.4 meg or so..

I realise I need to set the MTU, MRU and MRRU but what are the recommended values? I seem to remember with earlier MT versions it was not fussy... but the V 5 is giving me problems

a) Perhaps I should downgrade, but I like the new stuff (webfig, extra wireless info etc..)

b) What's your suggestions for the above values - I have tried MRRU at Juniper (1616?) and Cisco (1524?) values - from memory, but I did look them up! but no better performance..

c) Any other thoughts ... I don't like saying this but I think Tomato on a WRT54 GL performed much better. But of course, you can't do all the routing I need on a flashed consumer router....

d) Finally in the Wiki I have read about TCP MSS adjustment in the firewall .. I have found this in a NAT rule but haven't a clue about this - any help much appreciated!

Many thanks for reading a long post..!!
