RB1100 as access control PPPoE, how much capacity?

Mon Jan 31, 2011 5:34 pm

I can't seem to put the right combinations of search terms together on google to figure this out.

If I have a 100Mb internet uplink and I am using an RB1100 as a PPPoE access controller, how many users might the unit handle? Can it handle 1000 users? more? less?

Also, if the RB1100 is the appropriate hardware for this? At what point do I look at getting a faster x86 server?

Yes, RB1100 could handle such number with one condition, external RADIUS server should be used for PPPoE users.

Yes, I had planned on a seperate radius/mysql server.

Any idea what the maximum bandwidth an RB1000(edit: I meant RB1100) will comfortably handle? also, how much of a difference does PPPoE have on CPU usage on the box? meaning is 100Mbx1000users ok but maybe 50Mbx5000 users is too much?

If I understand PPPoE correctly (as implemented in routeros), I can increase capacity by adding another rb1100 on the same ethernet segment and the two will do a quasi-load balance and failover right? That is of coarse assuming my radius/mysql has capacity.

i would like to know about the rb1100 maximum bandwidth too.

I'm using for PPPoE Server, 2 HP ML110 2.4GHZ quad-core 2gb ddr and they are stoping with 800 sessions. When they have 400 in each, there's no problem.
I use radius and dynamic queue in these server (firewall just have the tcp mss change rule for everyone in mangle, 6 filters rules and 6 nat rules).

I think change these 2 server by 3 rb1100, is it a good idea?

thanks

Talking about RB1100 and PPPOE.

I have a serious problem running PPPOe on my RB1100 where the problem seems to be related to MTU and MAX MRU.
the users can connect and gain access and ping is working fine. but browsing is not working properly. Websites does not open some times, and some pages open and some are not. it is typical MTU issue. support told me to reduce the MTU and Max MRU to 1360 and to enable TCP MSS change, i did but nothing has changed. i am still communicating with them back and forth but still no luck.

Any successful experience with PPPOe on RB1100 ?

Regards...

Here the RB1100 is running with pppoe + radius + queue dynamic on a bridge interface. I can't connect more than 300 sessions because of the cpu load (80% with about 300 sessions, and when I open some informations in Winbox goes to 100%).
I have no problem with MTU that is 1480 and the MRU too.

I have RB1100AHx2 running

737 dynamic simple queues
OSPF/MPLS/VPLS
18 Filter rules
39 Nat rules
36 mangle rules

The CPU does max out every month or so but a reboot sorts that out
