quetree & PCQ

Thu Apr 14, 2011 9:08 am

Hello

I have struggled to find enough information regarding the configuration of PCQ and would like some feedback regarding rules when setting up and configuring PCQ.

The information I currently have says:
- make sure each user has between 10 and 20 packets. Thus pcq limit x users = max limit. So this would be ~20 x users = max limit.
The size of pcq limit also affects the response times? so, the bigger the pcq limit value the slower the network response times?

In the forum I have seen recommendations of setting the pcq limit to 200 and even 256.
I have also seen reference made to how the interface packet rate would affect the settings of pcq.

Please can you explain the links between the interface speed, packet rate, pcq limit and indicate if there would be a practical model for optimally setting and configuring pcq options?

Hello Zoem,

I make a presentation at MUM EU 2011 and also at MUM ID 2011 about PCQ.

http://mum.mikrotik.com/presentations/HU11/valens.pdf

there is one page on that presentation that explain limit and total limit in PCQ.

Hi ZoemDoef

I'm learn routeros qos about 2 years by myself (I can not afford the courses), because for me quality qos realization is very important, i read many resources and now i can say only one thing - if you want learn and practical apply qos in routeros you must end mikrotik courses, all documentation about qos in mikrotik routeros is very poor and for simple user, after read documentation and other resources, appear more questions than answers. About the parameters of PCQ i can say that if you set pcq-limit very big (i.e. 1024 or more) than you haven't got packet drops thats all. No more specific information about how it can calculate or universal calculate method. Maybe I'm wrong, so please correct me or direct me to the documentation about it or show simple examples (please do not direct me to the wiki or mum presentations - i'm read it all).

P.S. sorry for my bad English.

about response times - only type and size of parent queue (in case of hierarchical queue tree ) affects to response time, set type of parent queue pfifo and very small size or zero and you're see results (type of leaf queues set as pcq and any size - it doesn't change anything)

Hello valens and akosenko.

Thank you for the presentation, I appreciate it. Thank you for the feedback, I agree, akosenko, attending a training session would be the best option but I am not able to do that unfortunately.

I will have a look at the parent queue and test your suggestions.

Kind regards

Zoem
