Routerboard Selection

Tue Apr 26, 2011 6:17 pm

Hello,

I want to make the following network:

I think that the cheapest way is to use the following equipment:

routerboard 1: 711A-5Hn
routerboard 2: 433 + 3x R52
routerboard 3: 411AR & R52

What do you think, is it ok or i should buy 3x 433ah which has a lot more powerfull cpu.

As you can see i only want to share a 10-12Mbps adsl line to 5-10 people.

Thank you,

Tasos

For the amount of traffic that you are anticipating as well as budget considerations, the 711A 433 & 411AR should suit your needs just fine. Of course if you see yourself expanding a lot in the near future then go for more cpu. but based on your information you should be fine.

Cheers,

routerboard 1: 711A-5Hn
routerboard 2: 433 + 3x R52
routerboard 3: 411AR & R52

What do you think,
What happens when one site has a fault? You have too many different types of equipment and configurations. For backup you'll need nearly a complete duplication of all the gear.

I would change routerboard 3 setup to the same as routerboard 2 but not install the 3rd R52 wireless card (2nd 5GHz radio). Then make up a spare the same as these routerboard 2/3 setups with only one R52 fitted. This will give you a minimum set of spares should the need arise.

The scenario i have designed is the most extreme.

At the beginning i will only have routerboard 1 and 2. Probably i will never have routerboard 3.

So i'm thinking using 711A-5Hn + 411AR & R52 which is the cheapest way to do this.

What do you think?

blackmod why do you say this?

I don't use high power cards at all, because at point to point links i use 0 tx power with big antennas (80-100cm offset dishes with 5GHz feeders) and at APs 10 to 15 tx power depending on antenna.

I mostly use cm9, R52, R52n-M with 433ah and i am very satisfied.

Finally, i've just ordered 411U + R52 for routerboard 1 and 411AR +R52 for routerboard 2.

I beleive that i will be ok with this setup.
