RB1100x2/AH w/v5.12 Lossing Password

Tue Jan 31, 2012 4:07 pm

We swapped an X86 box with an RB1100 running v5.12 and now it keeps losing the password.

Any idea what could be causing this?

This may not be related at all but I had a similar issue with v5.11 on a x86 box. I logged in one day to find that my credentials didn't work but the default admin creds did. Every time I added my account back in it would be removed a few minutes later and back to the default admin account only. One thing I noticed is that the system also appeared to not have any license installed when I looked. It was still forwarding traffic OK but I later found out that the system had basically lost comms with the USB flash drive. A reboot solved the problem and also meant that any changes that I had made were not saved. You might try looking to see if this is a similar issue.

I had the same problem with two other RB1100AHx2.
Sometimes, on boot the RB would "forget" parts of the configuration,
such as passwords or IP Adresses. Config changes made during this problem are not committed to flash.
A reboot results in a kernel panic related to the flash device,
the bootloader resets to defaults because of a CRC error in bootloader configuration.
Afterwards, the full configuration is back again.

I fixed it by netinstalling ROS again, which took about 45 Minutes(!) when I first tried it.
A second netinstall only took 3 Minutes. This happened on both boards.
/sys check-install said everything is fine, and /sys check-disk did not report anything at all;
not during the problem when half the configuration is missing, and not when it's working correctly.

My guess is, that there is something wrong with the flash contents of the boards when they are shipped out.
