2 Hotspot using one WAN

Mon Mar 26, 2012 5:51 pm

2MB Up/Down connection via Fibre connection.
am currently using a Zyxel g4100 v2 with printer to run an internet cafe.
problem is the Zyxel doesnt do membership

I figured i could run two hostpots by connecting the 751 to the fibre connection and run hotspot for members using user manager and then connect the Zyxel g4100 with ticket printer to run another hotspot for non-members. Currently the Zyxel also allows casual users to print from the network. The Zyxel router also allows pppoe but i am not sure if i can run two hotspots from my Fibre connection

is this possible? At this time i am just looking for a solution

I also have a CISCO 1841 router that i am not using

Hi Nyasha, welcome to the MikroTik forums.

In answer to your question, yes you would be able to run the MikroTik hotspot on one interface and use the Zyxel connected behind another port.
For all intents and purposes the MikroTik would just act as a router for the Zyxel port, while it would do the hotspot functions for the port you set that up on.

If you know what sort of speed is available on the fibre connection you can even do QoS and manage the bandwidth allocated to hotspot users and the Zyxel side, making sure one doesn't override the other.

Thank you for your response. As someone who has little knowledge on Networking in General i am very much impressed with Mikrotik OS and what it can do. I intend to implement various things when i get the hang of it. I did setup the Zyxel myself and it was very straight forward. My cafe runs 15 computers off this wirelessly plus another 10-15 laptops/tablets during peak times

The 751 is a bit of a difficult one but i have read enough to get an understanding of how it works in the few days that i have been experimenting with it
i have a feeling it should work with a pppoe connection but i am not sure how. Now my question is how do I add the Zyxel to the ether3? (zyxel accepts pppoe connection)
My current network on the Zyxel is 192.168.1.32 to 192.168.1.200 and my gateway to this is 192.168.1.1. The zyxel does all the accounting and i intend to keep it that way. Its been very useful for this purpose.
How do i connect the Zyxel to the 751 and get it to pass on the requests from Zyxel after it has authenticated users.

Sorry i dont have a network diagram but this explains what i want to do as a first step. I can always change it when i acquire more knowledge.

ISP Media convertor(i have a static IP address from my ISP ether1)=>RB751(New hotspot for members who pay for monthly data bundles off a 1Mb link)=>Zyxel ( on ether2 connected to Ricoh MP2000 printer+ticket printer - servicing 30 wireless clients 512 link)

If you're using a PPPoE connection I'd recommend setting up the RB751 as a PPPoE Client (add a client to ether1 which goes out over your fibre) then change the Zyxel to simply use a static address or DHCP to connect to the RB751 on ether2 or ether3

So, assuming you've removed the default RB751 config, you'll want to do the following:
1. set router password
2. add pppoe client to ether1, making sure "add default route" and "use dns" are ticked.
3. add a private ip address (lets use 192.168.1.1/24 as our example) to ether2
4. add a dhcp server (use the setup button under ip->dhcp-server->server) to setup a dhcp server on ether2
5. add a private ip address (lets use 192.168.2.1/24 as our example) to ether3
6. add a dhcp server (use the setup button under ip->dhcp-server->server) to setup a dhcp server on ether3
7. add a nat rule for traffic passing out over the pppoe interface (ip firewall nat, add a rule where chain=srcnat, out-interface=pppoe-client, action=masquerade)
8. Change your zyxel to either:
a) static wan IP addressing and set 192.168.2.2 as its address and 192.168.2.1 as the gateway
b) dhcp assigned address (which it will pick up automatically)
9. plug zyxel into ether2
10. go into ip hotspot and run through the setup for a new hotspot on ether3

You now have the zyxel on ether2 with connectivity to the internet and can play around with the hotspot on ether3

Thanks for your help. Spend a few days playing around with the configurations and managed to connect the zyxel to the mikrotik router and still maintained my previous Zyxel based hotspot. am chaffed about this!! :D I will now spend the next few days setting up other connections. Once my WAN was up, the next key thing was setting up the routing. A friend helped me setup RIP.

Now i am working on the following:
1.Got 1 client who wants a 128k link - I have a Nano station2 at my disposal which i am thinking of setting up on ether4 in AP mode for my client to connect with the Mikrotik. What is best practice on this in terms of a reliable and measurable link? Also it must be scalable, when the number customers wanting a link increase. So far i have 1 but i am working on getting more.

2.I am also planning to setup user manager to sell some data bundles (500mb, 1gig) on the internal Mikrotik RB751G hotspot

As a new mikrotik user i am happy to say i made the right choice. if i had only known about this product earlier!!

omega, and to me the second question at a hotspot. How can I do so that when the network is wireless, the router and the router's set the hotspot Server
