hotspot bandwidth limiting

Tue Mar 07, 2006 4:12 am

Hi all.

I have latest MT on my hotspot. I wanted to limit each user or better each username for certain bandwidth.
I did it with added ip to every HS user and then simple queue for that ip.
Queues dont work for all users, but work for some of them - and they are all the same.. I dont understand why. Can anybody help?

You can use 'rate-limit' under 'profiles' to achieve this.

Ok, but if 2 clients sign in with same user/pass, then their bandwidth would be double right? I want them to split bandwidth of one, coz they use same user/pass...
And i would like to set them 1meg for 4minutes, and after 4mins only half of that.

Is it posible to make one queue for all usernames with options i mentioned?

You could either set the allowed users per account (shared-users) to 1 so they can't share, or just set a bandwidth queue on the interface so all users will share that one queue. See the manual for setting a single queue for an interface (there are also many examples in the forum on how to do this).

Perhaps you are missing some of the features of a hotspot under a hotspot user profile. If you define your own profiles, each time a user logs in, a dynamic bandwidth queue will be created for them, so you shouldn't need to create these manually. The default profile does not define bandwidth limitations, so you aren't getting the dynamic bandwidth queues that are created automatically when a user logs in if a bandwidth limit is defined. Take a look at the hotspot and user profile sections from the hotspot manual.

Re: hotspot bandwidth limiting

Sorry to jump in, but I was searching the forums on how to build a dynamic tx/rx that would give each user a bandwidth limit based on total users against data line bandwidth level. Meaning, the data line is 7mbps / 512 mbps so if there are two users the the rate limit would be 3.5mbps / 256 kbps and if there were 10 user it would be 700kbps / 51 kbps... or if there is a way to tell the hotspot that the data line is 7mbps / 512 kbps and allow it to share the bandwidth and bursts to keep someone from not being able to use the service. I am just not sure how to start or what works best. I have my first live mikrotik hotspot with 19 concurrent users hitting a single WLAN interface. Also, I am trying to figure out how to queue antivirus with the firewall. I am not good with CLI and I am not able to find a starting point to learn from, meaning I don't know how the default hotspot handles bandwith to being with. So any info would be helpful, thank you.
