Recommend me some wireless equipment for my topology

Wed Apr 18, 2012 10:30 pm

I have need for a wireless network. On the first half of the distribution is an AP providing access to two clients. One of these clients is hooked into a switch which is in turn hooked to another AP to talk to the second half of the network.

The second part has four clients and needs an additional AP to cover some tricky spots.

I put in three Hawking Wireless HWOBN1 units and six of Hawking's HWABN1 units to handle this originally. All of this equipment is 2.4ghz w/ omni-directional antennas and the latency/connection quality is killing me. I don't have responsive PTZ controls on my cameras and the connections are always dropping out. I don't know what I'm doing or they suck. Probably both.

Can someone recommend me some wireless gear to put in? This is all going to be placed outdoors. Longest stretch between any client and AP is about 300ft.

I was looking into MikroTik and thinking about picking up a few SXT units and some OmniTik APs to pull it all together.

I'm thinking I'll need three OmniTiks and six SXTs.

Your thoughts?

Hey I have found that if you have devices that roam between spots

say a guy walks with his reader from point A to point B if its setup as
WDS he can seemlessly roam between area's and not have to reconnect to the local accesspoint

catch is regardless if its WDS or just AP's if there are black spots there is just no coverage,
WDS is handy cuz you can just chuck in an access point in WDS mode to fill the blackspot and all it requires is
to be able to see another device to bounce the signal

in the case its jut Access points, well the device has to drop the connection and take a little bit of time to find the next access point kinda thing,
i guess you should ask can you enter say 10+ access points into the device and it can auto change when it drops from the last access point

in my honest opinion go WDS its fabulous for roaming
WDS = enter wpa key once
AP = enter WPA key for ever ap on the block of land

Im sure the equipment you have has an Ethernet cable which can be cabled to local equipment on each building also
bonus is if one of the devices goes down, it should maybe be able to pick up wds from another device and keep going
a form of redundancy if you add enough equipment

Also im taking a guess here but the latency is probably related to the omni
might be better getting say umm 90 degree sector? or even have 1 board 2 cards 2 90 sectors ( that's why you see on mobile phone towers multiple sector antennas covering 360 deg, cuz 1 omni will not cut it, its a better result putting multiple antenna's

so after reading what i just said
So now decide how you want to set it up

I dont recoment using omni to blanket coverage the area, they dont really go as far as you might want
i would recomend
A
Main AP with SXT bridge, then hang a couple of directional antenna's off another board facing the area's you need, and cable to some of the computers in each building
This would be AP mode NON-WDS
B
WDS
Main AP with a board that has say EG. 3 cards and 3 90 deg? assuming one of the antenna's will have a good enuff signal to pick up from the main AP
And do the same with the others, and make it possible that each unit can see at least one other unit
( you can actualy do this with 1 single card on the board but, since you are redistributing the wireless in other area's that apears to be further than 1 omni can work with this will improve the signal)

C if you just want data to each building and your not using the wireless for laptops and wireless devices then your just using the wireless for JUST the links
which in that case if you mount the OMNITIK high enuff the SXT's WILL get an amazing signal
But lets say worse case senario, there is a massive wall and one building can not reach the Main OMNITIK
You can SXT <----> SXT create a bridge to Station Bridge link which will make a link for that out of reach building

Install a mast where required will help you a lot, probably reduce the amount of AP's you though you will need
