Is This Possible? Please Answer Experts!

Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:59 am

Is this possible to connect the Radio (In the ground) with Antenna (In the Tower) through a Media Converter on both ends by interconnecting with Optic Fiber Cable?
Is there any [*]pigtail cable to convert with RJ45 connectors[*]?
Above things are not possible please specify the following IDEA is possible or NOT?

1.Connect the Radio with a AP on ground and positioning the AP in a Horizontal to focus the tower's top portion.
2.Connect another AP on Tower which also in Horizontal position to focus the ground AP.(As Point To Point setup)
3.Take the signal from the Tower AP and connect it with the Omni or Sectoral.

Is it work or not please reply friends...

You can't use cat5 (or fiber) to run an antenna. You have to use good quality antenna cable.

Yes, you can put a radio + antenna on the ground and shoot it up to a radio + antenna on the tower. Of course, you will need 2 radios on the top of the tower. One to connect to the ground signal and another to connect to the omni. (You can put both radio cards in the same tower router if it has the slots available).

BUT... if you are going to have a router on the ground and a router on the tower, then you can just connect the routers together with CAT5... unless you are unable to run cat5 up the tower.

That's an interesting set up. But how would the radios at the tower top be powered without the CAT5e and POE supply?

I have some neighborhood mast towers where everything is located at the top of the mast. The AP is an RB711UA-2HnD in an enclosure (for 2GHz) or an OmniTik (for 5Ghz), and the backhaul is an SXT or SEXTANT. Power (but no data!) runs up the tower on CAT-5e as high as it needs to go. The POE is distributed by a handy little manifold I came across: http://beyond-wifi.com/poe/ -- you can not only power multiple devices with it, but route data between them.

The nice thing is that I no longer have to worry about long runs of coax. The whole unit fits on one mast section, and if I ever need to raise the tower later I just add new sections and guy lines underneath it and run a longer POE cord.
