3G Modem - Signal Strength?

Thu Apr 26, 2012 6:52 pm

Hi guys,

Is there any way to see the signal strength of my 2g/3g connection while ppp is running?

I'm currently on the other side of the globe and the router is having some performance issues but I can't see any signal strength without shutting down the PPP-client.

Are you sure that you can do it while the PPP-client is using the modem?

What version of ROS are you using?

The modem is a ZTE MF626 on 5.14 and I tested the command while the PPP session was up.

I'm just running version 5.8, might be some new feature. Mine just says smth like "Cannot aquire port while being used by ppp-client".

You can also see this in Winbox :

-> open winbox
-> left-click "PPP"
-> left-click "Interface" tab ( default )
-> double-left-click on your 3G modem interface
-> left-click on "Info..." in right menu, almost on the bottom
-> make sure that in the "interface" option on the popup window your 3G connection is selected
-> "Signal Strength" at the bottom of the list will display your current 3G signal strength

Some general info about dBm ( in case anyone finds this post and won't know what to do with the actual values )
A 3G signal strength between -70 dBm and -80 dBm is optimal, but sometimes even on -100 or even -110 (worse) you can still get decent internet.

Lower dBm values means better 3G connection.

@ poxx
Thanks for this great info about "dBm"! I found this "info" button, but RouterOS says - "Modem couldn't respond". Data Channel was "0", Info Channel was "1". But when I changed Info Channel to "3", info shows up! Modem type: Huawei E353, working great with ROS 5.19.
