User Manager, Buggy, Lack of support, Disappointing?

Mon May 14, 2012 12:10 pm

Ok, so having run a hotspot based on an open source project for a large hotel for the past year, i decided that it would be time to "Upgrade" to a commercial solution. I did some research and played around with RouterOS for a few days and decided it was good enough to merit spending $200 on. However it was not until i deployed the server that i started to notice that UM has some serious bugs.

UM seems to have a mind of its own, users seem to reach their time limit randomly without any correlation to assigned time limits.
Often users will receive a message upon logging in, "no valid profile found" even though their accounts are indeed on UM and active.
Sessions tab simply does not work.
GUI is generally buggy as hell, things sometimes never update even though you refresh the page multiple times.
Basically so far UM seems broken and the free open source hotspot solution i was previously is an overall better solution. However this is not something i expected from a well known company such as Mikrotik, and certainly not from software that costs $250.

Why is it that Mikrotik support do not answer any of the threads in the UM forum? The forum is FULL of unanswered threads regarding similar problems.

Someone please tell me that i have made a simple configuration mistake in UM and not wasted $200?

A few more screenshots. Tried to downgrade to 4.17 today which seems far more stable, but it simply does not have the functionality i need.

I am utterly shocked that Mikrotik bundle this package in 5.15 which is labeled (Stable)
Usermanager 5.15 is by far some of the buggiest most unstable software i have ever used.

*Update

Had a few customers complain about their accounts not working, when i check userman the accounts were missing?

Few more pictures. The last screenshot shows just how confused userman is getting.

Your User manager data base file is corrupted or ?? hacked

You need to reload database file from a saved copy which was working perfectly before.

This should work with even 5.15

If this corrects you problem upgrade both RouterOS and UM to 5.16

Yes Saved file may be a few days older and may not contain all the data

but no choice!

As I can understand from this post, you have had a bad experience with user manager. And as you have already bought a mikrotik router. If you want, I can suggest you one more solution that works with Mikrotik and wont charge you anything. Check this: http://accessmanager.in/livedemo.php

Its been a long, hard, difficult struggle for me to get some functionality out of userman. I identify with your frustration. What I wish for the most, absolutly the MOST, it is for well written, and understandable, up to date manuals and documentation. If I can read it I can do it.

I know this is a little bit of this topic but consider the following sentence in- and out- of context on this page: http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/How_to_au ... MTP_output

"Remove the following line if you already have a virus chain if not added it in"

I am too stupid to understand this sentence, even though I have the ability to read it. :?

And yes I understand there is a whole world full of languages. But then please write it in Latvian and have it rewritten (translated) professionally in Spanish or English or in what ever language the most Mikrotik clients are . Or just sell Mikrotik in Latvia, and the problem will be solved.

There are a few people in South Africa that can (may be able to) help, understandably for a fee, but there is no way to help myself. :(
