RB2011 Changing CPU Frequency

Tue Jul 03, 2012 3:09 pm

Hey,

I noticed while digging around in Winbox -> System -> Routerboard -> Settings -> CPU Frequency that I can change it to 'above spec' frequencies: 500MHz <-> 750MHz (in 50MHz steps)

Does anyone else up the CPU frequency on their devices?
Are there any downsides apart from potential increase in heat/Watts usage?

I've set it at 650MHz and rebooted the router, now it seems to be showing up in Winbox's Resources page as 650MHz. So I guess it hasn't exploded yet...

The only downside is the extra heat and power usage, just like overclocking any other CPU. Also there is no guarantee that your CPU will run stable at a higher clock speed and you may end up killing it off sooner because of the extra heat.

Ahh ok,

I put it back down to 600MHz earlier, will probably just leave it at that!

Thanks!
